Lee Westwood was thought to be the banker for the gig in Italy but he's now ruled himself out given he's still part of the world's top 50, and would likely have a chance of another appearance, he'll wait for his chance.

Which leaves Stenson, who also thinks he could make the team, and Donald, who's been a vice for the last two matches.

There is a small bit of talk of Thomas Bjorn getting another go? On a similar note Paul McGinley never gets mooted despite all that he did in Scotland

So many options so I do think it should be a once only gig. I've gone Donald as I think it is pretty full on now and trying to make the team as well could be a distraction. He has been a vc often enough, played enough, he is prime for it.

Of the last 10 matches five have been won by non-major winners interestingly/not interestingly. I get the one-time factor but have always found it staggering that Azinger never got a second go at it

I'm basically happy for any previous stalwarts of the Ryder cup to get the captaincy but of the once only captains the one I thought did the best job was Langer.

What qualifications do the contenders have, away from the golf course?
Just being a good player has no relevance to the position. If it did the Yanks would have been almost unbeatable over the years.
McGinley and Bjorn certainly wouldn’t have won, and Faldo, Clarke and Harrington would have.

I haven't read all of the posts on this thread, but I must empasize strongly that I would be a very inappropriate choice for that particular appointment.

That being said, complementary tickets wouldn't be unappreciated.
I am ethnically Italian and might enjoy a visit to the motherland.
