Played my first ever round off the white tees at the weekend, at a course I've never played before (Karsten Lakes), and finished with 104 gross, 31 points.
And I thought I'd played well !

I am now at a stage where I am disappointed to be in triple figures, but on this occasion I’ll take it, a lot of the par 4's were unreachable in two for me, and I only lost one ball.!
This felt like a real step up in my golfing education, playing with low handicappers rather than the usual hackers ;-)

Now going to invest in a hybrid for the long 2nd shots, and probably moved forward timescales for looking at drivers. As well as try to build in a proper warm up, its ok for a 7 handicapper to stroll up & nail one straight down the middle, I am now absolutely clear I need a few warm up swings to get into any sort of rhythm !

I'm a similar handicap to you (27) and I'd have been pleased with 104 gross on an unknown course too.

I'll bet you can easily think of 5 shots that you could so easily have saved that would have carded a 99 too!! That's what keeps bringing you back!! :-)

Very good effort on an unfamiliar course.

You are so right about warming up. I have a few stretches before I leave the house, again when I have got my clubs out of the car, and then the two clubs at once routine while I wait on the first tee. I have tried playing without bothering to do this and I reckon it costs me at least a shot or two on the first few holes.

Nice course Karsten Lakes, had a decent round there with Smiffy earlier this year. Had you been to the Ping fitting center or were you just there for a round?

yep just on the one hole! skied tee shot, 2 hacks out of long grass in front of tee, hook into pond!

just there for a round with a mate who's a member. will be going again - £20 for coffee & bacon roll, 18 holes & meal after felt a good deal.
particularly enjoyed the hole with the lake running down the middle of the fairway (just checked, its the 6th). probably cause i won that one with a nett birdie while the other three all got wet!

Nice one. I've been umming and ahhing about going to Ping and thought about playing the Lakes following a recommendation from Bob. Looked at the course map and it did look like you needed a wet suit. Can't be unhappy with 31 pts on an unfamiliar track.

As for clubs I would seriously recommend the G15 hybrid. It's a great club once you get over the offset. Hit it like a long iron and with the Serrano shaft I get a great ball flight.

Happy club shopping and well played.

The Lakes is a great course. There's a bit of water about but if you play it sensibly (like I did ;)) you can put a reasonable score together. I think I had 34 points round there which I didn't think was too bad bearing in mind I had been playing like a leper on the run up to it.
Did I mention I also beat James in matchplay after being 3 down with 6 to play?
:D :D

Always nice when you're pleased with a disappointed score.. better than been disspointed with a GOOD score!

I shot -7 on my handicap on sunday and came off annoyed..
Playing off 18 went round the front 9 in +3 (best ive shot round) and then went to the easier back 9 (which im capable of shooting +2/+3) and shot +8 leaving me 11 over and 7 under my handicap of 18..

Course is a par 70 so although 81 is a good score i could have done so much better..

Best score is 77 though in winter conditions would have been nice to break 80.

Just the 306 times Smiffy :D

Always good to be wanting more from a round and 31 around a course you've never played is always respectable. At least next time you'll have a better idea of club selection and where you can and can't miss off the tee

well done, forget the hybrid get a driver first, then you will reach in two. dont be scared of the driver

Well done...when you get to the point that you're disappointed with a good score then you are getting there.

SO true.

I've often played fairly well, but not known the course etc.etc. and been pleased with the result.

I remember playing York Strensall

and being pleased with 34 points. I didn't have the first clue on about 10 of the holes, deliberately taking clubs off the tee to "lay-up" of bunkers, then dropping in the front., hitting nice shots (but the wrong club) but disappointingly long/short....but I loved it.

I even celebrated a 5 on a par 3.....

It's a good attitude to have.

Were you disappointed with your GOOD score?

Yeah i was gutted.. 3 putted a few times and went in the water.. there was at least 3/4 shots i left out on the course.

I need to get some cards in really and lower my handicap, i can play to 18 when playing very average which i suppose is a good thing.

I can assure you, no matter what level you play at, 21 HC or 1 HC, you will leave shots out there.

Oh i know that, it's just disappointing as i know as can and should have shot better..

Only the week before i'd come back in 39 which is why it was annoying!
