Still slightly undecided about joining a Club, I can think of all the many positives i.e. regular games and partners, official handicap, clubhouse, cost(if you play it enough) etc.

But I my only slight doubt is playing the same course all the time, I know you will get to know it, and every round is different, but....can it become a little repetitive, and take some of the enjoyment out???

Never boring! always something new to aim for each time you play ;)

Get in there, you'll have a great time and will wonder why you didn't join before now. If you really get involved it'll be a great place to play golf and meet your 'new' mates :D

it all depends on what you want out of the game,if you only go now and again then going to different courses is fine, same as society golf good laugh and a game of golf thrown in,but if you wish to take it more serious then joining a club can help with your game as you can practice and have a few holes when you fancy and lets face it if you can play on one course you can play on any it still the same game,i think your saying it becomes less a mental game if you know what club you are going to take long before you get to your ball, this is true but its hitting the shot you picture in your head every time that is the challenge and no two days are the same (in my case at present )

if you pick a good course then it'll have different challenges each time you play. But socially and competitively it is to be recommended.

Great post mate and definitely something that has stopped me this year. This will be my first proper season and I plan to play twice a week at a course and 3 times on an evening at my local 9 hole /pitch and putt. This is obviously a fair bit of golf each week but feel the experience I will get from playing different courses every time I play 18 holes will keep me switched on... I think this will benefit me when I get an official handicap next year...

At the moment I wouldnt have to submit 3 cards I know full well I will be playing off 28.

Enjoy whatever you do mate,

There is nothing to stop you playing other courses as well, invite members of other clubs to play at yours then they will take you to theirs, so you get to play other courses cheaper as the guest of a member.

Also check if your planned course has any affiliated courses, a few round me have about 5 each, all within 40 miles, so variety if you want it!

why have you not posted 3 cards already and got an official h/c this will give you more of an incentive to play better surly.

I played Aylesbury Park around 65 times last year and probably 15 times so far this year,

Each time its different, the Weather, Course layout, flag positions, how im hitting the ball, etc

Loads of variables, never get bored, happily play every day if I had the chance

Fragger

Theres always a section of the course/hedge that my wayward shots have not taken me so it feels like Im playing a different course. I cannot see me getting bored of my course anytime soon.

In respect to the points made on the social side whats people thoughts with regard to a golf club attached to a hotel chain ie Devers or Marriott as opposed to a local club that is just a golf club. Which do people find better or nothing in it if run correctly?

I have just left a club after 2 years.
This course really beat you up,trees everywhere,so
basically most shots you needed to play were over, under or around a tree.
Also very demoralising when you cream your drive only to find it at the
base of a tree.
I stuck it for as long as i could.
However the banter and company was good, and thats the reason you join
a club.
The fun,the banter and friendship.
Also an official handicap, which in my opinion everyone should have.

Hi Shaun, i have been a member of an old traditional club with expensive fees and stuffy members who are etiquette mad to the point of spoiling the game.

I now play a club that also has a hotel, spa etc and the cost is nearly half each month, the members far more friendly and the game is far more enjoyable each week i play.

One of the biggest hangups for new golfers is getting the official HCP, dont worry many clubs will not care if you have one for friendly swindle type comps only if you intend to play official club comps etc

Think hard about any clubs that insist on a joining fee as its alot of money to find you soon dislike the people at the club etc.

Another factor is if you have a buddy to play each week, if not joining a club is a must to get a regular game in and avoid playing solo which is no fun at all.

Where in Norfolk are you from, Norwich ?

I spent last year playing here there and everywhere but in my opinion its far better to join a club. I could never get bored playing the same place all the time. That's what I like about golf,it's always different, every round has it's own new challenges.I still regularly play other courses, but it's a better test playing your own course as you can add 5 shots to a new course you're playing as you don't know the layout.

At least on your own course you have a truer test of your ability as you know what you're up against, and you can track your progress versus previous rounds

Hi Wolfman, Yes i'm from Norwich, six of us joined Dunston Hall as the offer was too good to turn down but it is points based so when they run out we will move to a club closer to home about 30 min drive at the mo but there are four clubs closer, one is a Mariott where we use the range but the price for membership is high then there is Royal Norwich, one of my friends says he will not go there as he says it will be too old and stuffy, however I know a guy who plays there and says it is a good course and club and there is a good social side where you can just roll up and random fourballs are made every sat morning.

There are two other clubs slightly further away one both around the same price and one again is a hotel with two courses and another is a golf club. Just thinking ahead really. I know one of the guys I play a round with most weeks will go to any of the local clubs and would like to get somewhere where other members help you get better ie by playing with other lower handicap golfers.

Unless you happen to be a member at a particularly good course, what you say above is correct. There is nothing like teeing it up at a course you've never played, that's the attraction of golf - no 2 courses are the same. After a while on your homecourse it's the same shots over and over.

Nothing like being a member of a club, I think playing the course often makes it more fun, you can play better golf and score better. There is challenge in playing other courses but I have never thought of not playing at a course because I know it well!

I bet even after 30 years at a club you would not be bored of it, the better you get the more challenges you open.

Get involved with club matches, great way to play other clubs on the cheap if you need some variety.
