I popped a post up a couple of weeks ago about whether it is good to play on your own or not. Response was good and I have been our about 6 times since. I have tried all the different approaches to it, very indecisive I know.

I went out the first time and didn't score and went round a short 9 hole three times (1650 yards) and felt myself get more consistant and a bit of a confidence boost.

I have then been playing a 9 hole course (2617yds, par 35). A couple of times I hit about 4 balls of each tee and then scored my best ball on each hole as someone mentioned and if I messed a shot up I tried it again a couple of times. That again did wonders for the confidence as I went round in 42 then 38.

Tonight I went round and just played 2 balls and scored them both, felt like I played awful and then got a 52 and 48 which is a massive improvement on before.

I am playing this weekend around an 18 that I haven't played before with a group of 4 of us, hopefully I can take this with me. Just to say thanks to everyone that replied as I am feeling a lot more positive about everything now.

I now live 160 miles from most of my golfing friends and only have time to play in the week, so I tend to go on my own for 9 holes after work.

Depending on how busy it is depends on how I play it. I don't tend to score officially, but I'll keep a mental note of what I'm scoring, so I can see if I'm improving, getting worse or staying the same (I've shot low 40's on a Par 34 the last 4 times I've been. My short-term aim is to get down to a consistent less-than-40).

I find it quite theraputic but I do end up talking to myself ALOT. I even find myself asking myself "why are you talking to yourself" :D

Sometimes I'll play a couple of shots if I didn't like my first one. I tend to play more than one ball when I get around the green though. Tee to green I'm fairly consistent, and if I hit a bad shot I generally know what I need to do to correct it (it just doesn't always happen ;)). When I get to the green or around the green is where I struggle. So if I hit a duff chip, or one that's too long, I'll hit a couple of balls to get a feel for it. Same thing with the putter.

I much prefer playing with people, and playing 18 holes, so I'm looking forward to the weekend immensely, but going for 9 holes after work on your own is great for working on your game IMHO.
