Playing from the semi rough/fringe of the fairway?

I played up Chester last night beezerk. Time did you play? It's looking good a the moment. Don't worry if your just off fairways I think the fairways are tight up there

Played with the Snellmeister between around 6 and 8ish mate, just when it started belting it down lol.
Course is lovely really glad I took the plunge and joined, desperately need a few more lessons though to see what I'm doing wrong.

Snells game looks like it's coming along nicely, strikes the ball much more consistently than me and usually outscores me on most holes.

Didn't you mention you were caddying for someone on Saturday?

for me it all depends on the lie. i disagree with some of the posts suggesting taking more club. the more loft the easier it is to get out.
if its not a great lie, i'll rarely take more than a 6 iron. occasionally for the longer shots around 190+ i'll get the hybrid 2 iron out as it seems to pop out quite well unless its buried, but 3-5 irons are big trouble unless the ball is sitting up ok.

If you are struggling as badly as you say it sounds like you are coming in too flat on your downswing.

You shouldn't be trying to hit under the ball - you should be trying to hit the ball then the ground after it.
Do you try to scoop the ball and hence leave your weight on the right hand side?

I think I do mate, I'm fully aware my balance on some shots isn't great, I'm also guilty of trying to "cream" the ball too much.
As my playing partner said last night, it helped him a lot by slowing his swing down however my head had already gone by that point and I just wanted to smack the ball in half :D

If he is going for the green, the lie in the rough is going to require more club than it would from the fairway, so there is really no choice! And it will be even more difficult from the 'sat don' lie. Taking a club with greater loft is committing to the lay-up approach - probably quite sensible where anything more than a 6-iron is to be used - as per my 'course management' approach.

Yah caddies for Walton
Loads of drink after get yourself up

Long irons are not good out the rough, the grass gets caught around the hozel and tends to twist the clubface open and create poor contact.

I would advise either using a shorter iron with a steeper swing that gets into the back of the ball or use a hybrid as they have a broader sole that cuts through the rough better.

I was always under the impression that the club would close hen grass wraps around hosel!

After my 'bounce' blunder last night, I've checked an these guys think that way too.

Not a bad article either.

Not sure how British fathers would welcome the author if he came to collect their daughter for a date though!

You are correct Foxy. My mistake, the clubface closes in the rough. Thanks for that.
