Pitch and putt - where to play?

P1010011.jpg

Depends if you diferentiate between a pitch and putt and a par 3 course. The above is the third on the Rutland Water par 3 course which remains my favourite, great scenery and needs anything from a wedge to a 3 wood off the tee.

Oh, joy.....such a long time since I've seen that picture.....I wanna play!!! can I go out in the dark??

There's a nice one at Wycombe Heights, High Wycombe. Not cheap at £8 monday-friday but looks like its got some decent holes. Theres's one at Aylesbury Park as well that I'm going to get The Boy out on over the summer.

We have one or two down here over looking the solent, it can make for a tricky bit of pitching and putting when there is a northerly wind blowing in. Makes you think though and is very good practice for the short game.

I have a favorite parr3 course, though it can hardly be described as a mere pitch & putt, as you need a damn site more than a wedge to play it.

I use it when I want to work on my irons & leave the woods in the bag. Infact many longer courses would do well to take note of how well they take care of their Tee boxes, Fairway, Bunkers & greens.

Off the Yellow daily tees the shortest Yardage is the 114yard 11th & the longest is the 215 yard 5th off the yellow daily tees. Total yardage 2925 for 18 off the yellows 3125 off the whites

As I say its no mere pitch & putt Its a course you can take nearly every iron out of your bag & use. 18 holes are £12 & 12 holes are £8.

Snodhurst Bottom in Chatham - i mention it as it is a cracking name. Could easily be a shire in Frodo-ville. I bet MedwayJon has stubbled round there?

There's also the Strand. It used to be 18 holes of about 35 yards each....rubbish. A few years ago they tarted it up to a 9-hole with PGA standards. Not played there for ages though. I am planning on a few P&Ps this year as it really does help your game. Be a chance to try oout my new Taylormade TP wedges too!

Anyone in the Berkshire area should check out Billingbear, just North of Wokingham. They have two 9 hole courses, one being a full length course and the other a par 3.

The Par three is a cracking little course with two holes completely over water tee-to-green, and one hole of about 210yards. Its a good test.

Billingbear Park.

My local one isn't bad, in fact I learnt to play golf there: Markeaton Park, Derby.

I played a good one years ago in Cornwall. I think it was at Watergate Bay?

Years ago when I was at college, the par 3 course next to Hayling Island had better greens than its 18-hole neighbour, although the rest of the course was little more than scrubland in the summer. Didn't matter if you hit the greens of course, but that was not always an easy task, especially for one whose fullish wedge-play has long been a real Achilles heel!

Weston, as a fellow Basingstoke local (of yesteryear), I'll challenge you to 18 on the famous parkland track of Worting Road, with it's picturesque surroundings taking in the the ten-pin bowling zone and ice-rink...

Seriously, pitch and putt is not to be sniffed at. Tappers could do with a few rounds there...

On my earlier post I said Watergate Bay, I was wrong it should have been Holywell Bay.

Sorry

castlehawk golf club, Rochdale.
it's not P+P, but they have an 18 hole par 3 (i think there's one longish par 4).
there's also a 9 hole Par 4 course.
£11 monday to saturday, £13 sunday, for an all day ticket.
play as many times as you want.
it's not the plushest course, but for beginners or to practice your irons it's brill.
