With the wife wanting a long lie in today and me having to get up early I was given the chance to play golf.
Having decided last week that we would get up at the same time on Sunday I did not bring along my clubs to visit my wife. Little did I know but she had caught a cold and wanted to stay in those extra vital hours.
So at 7am I was faced with a choice, play with a set of hired clubs OR dig out my wifes great grandfathers irons. I fancied the challenge rather than spending the £2 hiring some rubbish sticks, what a fool I could look afterwards!
As some of you may know I once tried to play with those old clubs before, but gave up after 5 holes due to the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the woods.
This time I had just a par 3 course to play, 150 yards at the most.
So with inter-war bladed irons (Niblick, 7 and a 5), a 1930s benny putter and some borrowed balls I set out to the first tee.
With a little warm up, some chipping and putting I faced the first hole, ammo consisting of some decent lake balls lent to me by the pro shop for free.
In the nets nothing looked wrong with the 7 iron, 110 yard 1st hole seemed to match a steady swing... Swoosh... Up into the wind (at least it went up) but blown off course and drops 20 yards short. Niblick pitch (landed it right where I wanted to) to two feet and a par on the first!
Even with compensation for the wind on the next two holes another massive fade ensued into deep wet rough.... fluffed chip, lip out, bogey both times.
Hooked the 5 iron on the next two but somehow salvaged two more bogeys with some good putting, OK four over after five, not bad!
Niblicked over the lake and bunker, 100 yards with a full swing, pitched back out deep wet rough to two feet again, impressive par!
Repeated the feat on the next, no greens hit after 7 but +4 gross thanks to some impressive putting and chipping.
1/2 a 5 iron into the wind, just shy of the green, chipped to 3 feet, steady par. +4 heading to the 150 yard last hole!
OK chickend out, 3/4 5 iron to the front of the green, mental error ensued! With my normal chipping game I would have just bounced it off the downslope and let the energy take it to the hole, tried it with these clubs and the ball came out way lower than my normal wedge and took off to 15 feet! Disaster!
Took my time over the putt, set it rolling, rolling... rolling!!! Right round the hole...50/50 chance of dropping... STAYED UP!
Tap in for a +5 gross for 9 holes around a little par 3 with clubs 3 times my age! Not bad for a mornings work I say!
Did not hit a single green off the tee.. not one! Last time out I shot the same score with a naughty putter but hit 6 greens.
