To be honest it is one of my biggest gripes, it gets right under my skin. Was driving to golf a couple of weeks ago and a woman is on the phone. Lights go green and am sat behind her a few seconds and I Pip the horn. She looks at the woman at the side of her and glares at her. We got around the corner I passed her and she's then eating an apple. Eh.
With today's announcement that you cannot drive and use your phone, for me it has not come to soon. but me and Missis T are none the wiser. In her role she spends half her driving time on " hands free" but we and she are not sure now whether you can or cannot go hands free accept calls etc etc. But you can use your sat nav.
watching the police talking about it on the news, and they say it is not before time but they do not have the resources to enforce it 24/7. They want the proceeds from the fines to go to the police to help enforce this new updated law.
Thoughts and help clearing up this misty new law greatly appreciated.

Edit to say I typed this at home and not on the M1.

Excellent news and not before time. My daily commute is dual carriageway and motorway and it is staggering the number of drivers I see using their phones either blatantly holding them to their ear or looking down not watching the road.

ps.....I car share so I'm able to watch these cretins safely while not driving myself.

There's the one on twitter today, a journalist on the way to cover the launch of the new rules, gets caught on his phone while driving, oh the irony.

Never mind using a phone while driving, smoking should be banned while your driving a car.

But back on topic about phones, the law should've been changed to a 1yr driving ban and £1,000 fine. The carnage that can be caused and the lives ruined due to someone's negligence behind the wheel, should have a much stronger penalty then what is now.

Tashy - Hands free is fine, picking up your phone is not.

I see someone every day on their phone. The worst are tradesmen. I reckon 30-40% of tradesmen I see are on phones whilst driving. FIT A KIT YOU MUPPETS :sbox:

Yes totally agree with this but would go three strikes and you are banned for 5yrs.
Makes my heart bleed when they start pleading they can't do their charity work if banned .
We all know the rules just stop it.

100% agree.

Drop your phone between your legs while driving, you may quickly look down, but it's not going to cause you any major problems.

Drop a lit cigarette between your legs while driving and you are going to be extremely distracted until you find it.

There is no set group that's more at this than others, all of sosociety does it. Yes it has always annoyed the hell out of me, but also don't use of mobile phone also includes in a line of traffic stationary as well as using it as a sat nav when it's stuck to the windscreen...it's still using a mobile phone.
My biggest beef right now though is the number of (mainly foreign) hgv's that are parking up on the hard shoulders of main A roads and motorways. Still only a £30 fine, and that's if the police can spare a man to go and get them. No doubt nothing will change until a few have lost control in their car and ploughed into a stationary truck and killed themselves.

There is no change to the law relating to "hands free".

The case remains that the existing law requires drivers to be in proper control of their vehicle. If you have, for example, a built-in Bluetooth system where all you have to do is press a switch on your steering wheel to answer a call, then your call should be no more lacking in proper control than having a conversation with a passenger.

Jurgen Klopp has been driving up and down the road outside Anfield all afternoon hoping to get stopped because he didn't even get six points in February.

It's a good start. As people mentioned above, there are other things similar dangerous and not forbidden (yet). But then, how far do you go? Coffee? Cold drinks? A snack? Applying make-up? Smoking? Using a sat-nav? ... The list of what people do in a car while driving is endless.

My sister is in the fire service, she's had to spend way too much of her career cutting people out of cars and dealing with the aftermath of RTAs. She says it's been shocking how many more accidents they're having to attend to as a result of people driving whilst using mobile phones, some weeks it's been every call they get and it's horrific how much worse the problem is getting year on year.

There is definitely something much more distracting about smart phones. My Mrs can have a whole conversation with me whilst I'm looking at mine and I've never any idea what she's said. :D

rtc's have dropped year on year since 2005. the amount of people requiring extrication has also dropped. mainly due to the introduction of boron steel.
however, there has beeen a 2% increase over the last 14 months but there had also been an increase of 1.6 in road usage.

the fire service are definitely not attending more rtc incidents

The problem is the way people have become dependent on their mobile phones, they need to be constantly communicating with others and most of the time it's just unnecessary garbage. How on earth did we manage without these devices? I am really concerned at the way people and especially the younger generations have been brainwashed by them.

I've no doubt there is truth in both the stats and my sister's perception of the problem based on her every day experiences. She might be statistically wrong, I don't actually know, but it's pretty clear she feels it's a growing problem and it's not getting the attention it needs. Wouldn't be the first time a person's emotional view of a difficult problem is different from the reality.

Criminal record for driving with a phone in your hand
