Pet may become a banned word

Word of warning for anybody with pets. PETA want to ban the word "pets" now, as they are living beings and not possessions. They also want to ban phrases like "let the cat out of the bag", "grab the bull by the horns" and "one trick pony". However, coming on Good Morning Britain was not the best platform to announce this, with Piers Morgan as presenter.

Piers: What is wrong with one trick pony?
Peta: Ponies are not here to do tricks for us, they are their own individual animals.
Piers: Some ponies love doing tricks.
Peta: Blank
Piers: Have you asked the pony if they like doing tricks?
Peta: Ponies don't speak English

It was a funny argument, reminded me of primary school. Piers also says Weasels are sneaky, that's why they are called weasels. How to debate against that?
 
If this is all PETA have to worry about, people owning, and looking after their pets, they should pack up right now. My pets have a better life than I do. They certainly have better medical cover.

When I first moved to Lincolnshire from Northern Ireland in 2005, a stranger called me "duck". I nearly punched him (if I was a more aggressive person from my neck of the woods, I definitely would) as I thought he was effectively calling me "love", and therefore being extremely patronising. I didn't realise calling someone "duck" was like saying "mate". So, good point. I might e-mail PETA to see if they can ban "duck" to avoid unnecessary punishment beatings.

Although it's bound to get attention, after all he's probably going to rant about it for a while, just like the vegan sausage rolls, Meghan Markle etc - he's excellent at advertising things he's supposedly against!

Well, this really puts the cat among the pigeons.

There are no words for that really. Are they actually turning their focus towards animals who are homed and being taken care of? They must be bored.

When I saw the name of this thread I thought it was exactly that. I love the various endearments around the country. I love hearing them, they always make me smile. Anyone who thinks they are sexist or patronising needs a bucket of water emptying on them, they are non sexist and friendly.

As for the actual piece, I stopped watching GMB a while ago as they have these fake arguments every morning. They are embarrassingly bad.
 
You need to remember that this is the organisation that took a photographer to court on behalf of a wild monkey to stop a photo being used as the monkey hadn’t given it’s consent!

I'll never understand why some organisations will go to extreme lengths to make themselves look like a laughing stock, and lose whatever minimal support they had in the first place.

If only Harry and Meghan had PETA fighting for them in court about use of photographs, maybe they'd have stayed in England :)
 
I've just read the exchange, and it's amazing really, that despite being on the side of reason, and having pretty much an open goal in terms of winning the argument - Piers STILL managed to come off as a complete and total see you next Tuesday. It's a talent.

In fairness, I would be amazed if PETA had come out with them saying they want to 'ban' words. They have likely stated their view and how they would encourage people to talk about animals.

Ultimately even the government can't ban words and there is zero chance of them legislating to do so.

What I think has happened is you've seen a story and it's been hyped up by having the word 'ban' put into it and you've continued with that hyperbole.
 
Bloody ridiculous if true and the sort of overly PC crap from people that just to seem to want to always be offended on behalf of someone else or something else. A pet cat, dog or whatever else people may have as pets generally are kept as pets for companionship have loving homes and in most cases get unbelievably well looked after.. That is what's important not the the singular word used to describe them
..

Yes, it is true when PETA are not asking to actually ban the word pet. I was being flippant to highlight the argument.

They are suggesting a better word for pet could be used, such as companion. The question is, why? There must be a disadvantage to using the word pet, if they are suggesting using another term. It appears that they believe the word pet is an offensive term to animaly, or at least more offensive than companion. Whichever way you look at it, absolutely bizarre PETA are even getting themselves in such an issue.
