Do you need a non windows os? Or are you looking to re purpose an old machine?

bit of both, I have an old laptop I'm thinking of tinkering with and may 'upgrade' the desktop if I am successful.

All I can say is give it a go, there is a wealth of support out there for Linux and you've got nothing to lose. I've not used peppermint but I believe it's based on Ubuntu which is one of the most straight forward to use distros. They offer a familiar graphical interface, rather than the plain old bash.
