Peer pressure at the Driving Range

A gay traveller isn't that strange.

I'm good friends with a lot of the local romany gypsies (not pikeys - they are the irish tinkers), 2 of the boys got "married" a couple of years ago.

The community couldn't believe it.

As for topless men on the driving range - why? you just wouldn't would you, what a numpty.

I was down the range last night, and noticed the condition of the flood lights just at the end of the bays. They are about 18" diameter, and attached to the roof, pointing down the range. The one in my bay must have had about 100 dents in it, like it had been beaten to death with a hammer. It wasn't even round anymore. How bad are these idiots.

Hey John, good thread.

I LOVE the range and have given up watching the other players. When I take a break, I sometimes watch what's going on and t.b.h. it makes me a bit sad. Awful shots replayed over and over again, ingraining the poor elements of terrible swings....but we all start somewhere.

A few members at my last club often claimed you couldn't really learn at the range. Like I said in another thread, my priority (and yours too, it would seem) is to work on a quality strike, straight hitting and a few pitches thrown in. I think (suspect) that folks think I'm very odd.....swinging with a towel or head-cover, practicing my old Leadbetter/Faldo drills like "thumbs up" or the "set your wrists, then turn your body". I envy the boys that hit a range balls 280 when I struggle to get 230? but the woods are full of long hitters and 9/10 can't match the more "refined" players out on the course.

I saw a guy the other day with two curtain rails on the mat aimed 15? degrees right of target. Folks thought he was a nutter, I knew the deal and thought......there's someone fixing their fade....good call.

You're spot on, Dave.

Ignore everyone else and try to do what you need to do to improve.

Was down the range the other day with my fangle alignment aid and couldn't give a damn. I was nailing it and making progress with the swing thoughts my pro gave me 2 months ago (I'm not a quick learner!).

Played in the medal yesterday with a very tidy 4 handicapper and was very envious. He had the swing I knew I wanted...the follow through that my pro has been trying to get me to replicate for a year. When I hit the fairway (!) I outdrove him by 40 yards. When I didn't (which was often) I took 2 shots more than him. He ended up with an 83. Me with a 90 (including a 10)

The point is.... he was ...and looked like.. a player for the whole round. I looked like a duffer for half of it because my swing is trying to catch up with my brain.

I'm gonna try to ignore my scores for the next six months and concentrate on my ball-striking because I know I have to get worse before I get better. I've had 4 scores of 72 in the last 2 years and the best this year is 75 but I'm now hitting the ball ten yards further and sweeter than ever. I just can't replicate the new swing every time. But I know I'm better. Practice, practice..but only the right way. It's the only way to REALLY improve.
