I get very intermittent sound on my pc, some youtube plays ok, some with raspy sound and lots with no sound.

All hardware appears ok (no yellow triangle in device manager), all speaker connections are in including the one to the pc.

anything I can do/try to identify what the issue is as its ruining viewing pleasure?

ta

does it play music files stored on the PC OK?
or is it just some files from the net? Do you get a message about codecs at all?

Go back to device manager and write down your audio device details, then go to the manufacturers webste and see if there is a new audio driver available

also check you have the latest version of Flash player

thatll keep you going for a bit :)

cheers Phil,

Music files A ok...tick
no messages about codecs and its mostly all t'interweb stuff that plays really badly or not at all
latest flash installed...tick

device mgr says three things
AMD High definition Audio device
High Definition audio device
Sound Blaster X-Fi extreme audio

what drivers do I look for?

Go to your sound properties and see which is enabled as it wont be using all three at once. Soundblaster xfi sounds like you have a soundcard installed seperately to to on-board device. Try changing the default playback device and see what happens. If you are using a soundcard then ensure it is seated properly (unless its a laptop).
Hard to say without seeing it.

they are all enabled- have been for a year
changing default playback device? how do I do that?
must be 'seated' properly as music plays fine

heres a good example- someone posted this in the lounge, I hear all the intro music then when that fades the guy is mute:confused:

One will be set as default though. System wont be using them all at once.
Right click on speaker icon in system tray and go to properties. Playback devices and then check whichbis default. Try changing it to another.

they all have a location of 0 1 or 2 in device mgr

AMD hi def is 0
High def audio is 2
Sound blaster X-fi is 1

none say default:confused:

right clicking on speaker icon in sys tray doesnt give properties, but it does give a volume mixer?

WOOHOO, sorted:whoo::whoo:

Cheers Greig, it was in that speaker icon where I right clicked the speaker and clicked 'playback devices', the speakers were default (as they should be) but in properties it was set for 7.1 sound which stereo speakers obviously dont do, hence I would hear some audio but not the rest.............now set for stereo and full sound is restored..........
thanks mate
