Painting Chrome Fittings

The chrome drain fitting in my bath is looking a little tarnished and, rather than replace it, I would like to just touch it up with the right paint. Ideally I'm looking for a brush paint that would make it come up with a decent chrome like finish. I've looked on the internet and seen lots of options, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had tried to do a similar thing and what worked and didn't work.

IMHO you need to spray to get a decent finish in chrome paint.

When you say drain fitting, do you mean the but the plug goes into?

That's the one. The trouble with spraying is trying to control the overspray, or the spray going onto the water below the plughole.

for the amount of hassle in prepping, painting (with paint good enough to not flake, so some kind of hammerite type paint will be needed), personally, I would just buy a new waste fitting if the discolored chrome bothered me that much!

The trouble is, to replace the fitting would mean an awful lot more work than to just paint over the chrome. The bath is built in and taking all that apart and then having to put it all back together would be a mammoth task.

Upstairs. And I can't get at it from underneath either without taking down a ceiling we've just replaced.

Ah well , was just a thought, we had the same problem renewing the drainer grid . I just cut a 600 x 600 hatch below the bath to allow access then sheeted plastered when finished.
Another time I tried chrome spray painting our shower enclosure uprights umpteen times after they had discoloured. I completely removed them to do it but sadly it was a waste of time.
Ended up buying a new shower enclosure

I can't envisage how your bath is fitted but it sounds like you need to make some allowance to be able to access the bath plumbing. If you get a leak under the bath or need to change a tap how will you fix it?

Paint won’t last long imo.
You can sit a new one inside the old one.
Sit it on a seal of silicone.
