you have to get as many as possible on side,
you need a petition,
and you need them to write individually, both to local and central government

presumably there will be a public enquiry, so you must be organised, facts and figures not nimby - if there isn't one try to force one, injunction maybe. you will need press and tv

councils are frequently lazy when it comes to enquiries, finances wrong, old/out-of-date maps so if you have someone who can produce the up-to-date stuff. challenge on specific points - photo a bad site, then force an answer on how they propose to avoid these issues, effect on local schools. do your homework and don't exaggerate.

but even then there's no guarantee

Sorry to hear of your impending predicament.

A while ago, so local legend has it, some uninvited guests pitched up with their transits and caravans not far from us, but sadly (for them anyway) it was one of the "more neighbourly" less stranger friendly areas. The police were informed that "many" local residents were not pleased about the visitors and were about to "move them on". The boys in blue turned up to see between 50 and 70 locals meandering near the site in their best shell-suits.

Cutting it short, the visitors were invited to move within the hour or be left to deal with it themselves......

Sorry about the " ", not keen on using them out of context.

Can`t say that will work in all cases, just lucky people round here look after their own.

Good luck with the action you do take.

A couple of years ago a number of travellers moved in on what was the old railway compound in the centre of the village. Unknown to them, the land had recently been purchased by a family (BIG family) who own the fairgrounds in local resorts and also a travelling fairground.
To cut a long story short, in the depth of the night the family turned up armed with baseball bat etc and kindly asked the travellers to move on. Within the hour the land was virtually clear and anything left behind was piled up and set on fire. We havn't had a problem with travellers since.

For a start you might consider not using the term Pikey. It will hardly get your campaign off to a good start if it's seen to be based on racist bigotry rather then sound economic or social policy arguments.

Thanks for the responses, obviously the term Pikey will not be used at any official meeting or on any letters sent in connection with the challenge. But we all know that these are not your old style Romany, read your future type gipsy.

Maybe a quick call at the local library, a quick read of Mr Hitler's ideas and off to the local shop for the jack boots and your all set.

Perhaps you would prefer them to be moved on next door to whoever but not your goodself!

NIMBY!!

And yes, I have a well used travellers stop within 300 yards of me, the local park and ride site and for the record I stay in the safest area of my city according to the local police stats.

I also accept that we are all different, thank God and this thinking allows the Travellers to be treated with a wee bit respect, in my book.

As I and my family have been victims of the crimes of travellers in the past it does change ones perception of them, prior to the things that happened to us I didn't care where they were as long as they got on with there own lives. Maybe I shouldn't think they are all the same but you do become wary of any group of people who have done you harm.

The last thing I am is a racist, I only feel this way toward them because of my past experiences.

What a heart warming story. A victory for all right thinking violent vigilante NIMBY thugs.

Surely everyone has a NIMBY approach to gypsies!!!!
If they set up in your town/village/hamlet and it becomes an always used spot, it will affect house prices/tourism etc. Im lucky that I do not have this issue near to my home, but the town I live in has gypsy/traveller sites.
Unfortunately the decent bunch are tainted by the the thieving/trouble making element, and that has always been the case.

The crap and shite that the gits have left on two sites I'm aware of around here (Edenbridge & Tunbridge Wells) means that if they pitched up near me I'd be heading to the garage for a gallon of petrol and a box of matches

I think that the main problem is that local councils are not providing sites where these people can live, they have to live somewhere.

However...

we have a site between Amersham and Beaconsfield which was closed a couple of years ago because the people who used it, treated it as a rubbish tip.

If anything was nicked in the area, all plod had to do was have a quick look at the site and often the stolen goods would be recovered.

They did not send their children to school, so the kids are largely uneducated, what chance have they got.

They basically were little more than animals.

This "romantic" idea of a lifestyle is from a bygone age, I have difficulty seeing how it fits in, in modern society.

I know that many follow the Summer Fairs around the country and then set up camp illegally in the autumn / winter owing to a lack of approved sites.

It is a very difficult problem

Councils need to
1 provide more sites
2 provide educational support for the children and adults
3 help integrate into society.

The Travellers need to
1 Use the approved sites
2 treat the facilities with respect
3 send their kids to school
4 stop the link to petty crime
5 pay taxes like everyone else
6 get proper jobs
7 stop illegal camping. it does their cause no good

Im glad im not the poor bloke who has to sort this one out

A local paper reported on some members of the travellong mommunity over here-

Travellers turned up and blocked an entrance for a transport business. When asked to move the travellers wanted 'expenses' the business refused. That night the breaks failed on one of the diggers and the digger came to rest an inch from the travellers door. Thus travellers stuck inside caravan - in the morning the travellers agreed to pay the transport company 'expenses' to move the digger -

True story - (can't find the Belfast telegraph page but I will look again)

In short - use your head and don't do anything stupid.

The problems travellers bring are well documented and whether society should find suitable sites for them is debatable, but they are Romanys in the main and to pretend that they are not and that this excuses the frankly racist tone on the thread is deplorable -or is "Pikey" a term of endearment?

we had the same problem a few years ago, not far from smiffys, on our cricket pitch. no cricket untill the end of june, cricket pitch a foot deep in grass, pavillion flooded, local sheep being shot, crime rate up, there and previous illegal site they were at, so please do not get romantic about these pikeys, they are out for what they can get, and f--- everyone else. if they did what fragger said and intergrated, no problem, but another purpose built site i know of was stripped of everything they could sell, so until they chose to be part of a community, they will all ways be frowned on. i hope that none of them ever turn up on anyones golf course, then there may be problems. they know all the laws of where they can go, and how long they can stay, before being evicted.
rant over.

Live and let live. Better they stay in Wales than spoil a nice English village anyway.

I concur.

Also isn't using the word P**** deemed racist and yet the mods leave this thrash on display?

Doesn't saying they should stay in Wales and not England have racist overtones and also make you a NIMBY, because I never mentioned nationality or race.
We just don't want the country park to be used as a site after £850,000 of tax payers money was used to clear and landscape the area. There are many brown field sites that can be used in the county.

As for the description P***y, down this way it is just a nickname like scouser or geordie or cockney or taffy. So if that affends my appologies

Our local paper has an ongoing vendetta against the 'rogue travellers' as they call them and you could get a job with them no bother at all, they spout the same nonsense!!

Thieving is done by the travellers!!

I will gladly send you stats confirming that my area is virtually crime free WITH TRAVELLERS AS NEIGHBOURS!!

Maybe you prefer your local lad brought up in your midst, educated locally, not an animal (in your opinion) but, as we have experienced in the last two weeks - with a gun.......!!

Maybe thieving to feed a habit has not yet hit your area but these poor souls are not travellers but the children of your neighbours.

To call a travellers child an animal is beyond contempt!

In my Church a family are educating their own children so their offsprings have 'no chance and are uneducated' in your opinion.

To finish, I have first hand knowledge of a Traveller, she is a millionaire - she is a titled Lady - held in high regard but has never given up her lifestyle and guess what? Everyone reading this knows her name!

Uneducated? A thief? An animal?

I really feel sorry for you.
