Anyone played there? I'm due to be playing there in a couple of weeks and would like some knowledge on it.
Hope you have included a round at my place ?I'm booking this for Captains' Away Weekend next May. Popped down on Saturday for a tour and got a free round with the Operations Manager! It's a good course with some really tricky holes.
They have videos of all the holes here: http://www.oldthorns.com/golf-course-in-hampshire/visual-of-the-18-holes-at-old-thorns/
Tips I can think to give you:
2nd: Watch the approach to the green from 140 yards as everything slopes from right to left, even if you're up the top of the right side.
5th: 353 yards, but much, much shorter than you think due to the elevation. Whatever gets you 200 odd yards should leave you a short iron or wedge in. I hit 17 deg hybrid some 220-230 and lost it in the bushes right.
6th: Not worth going for the carry over the ditch. Lay up and play it like the par 5 it is.
8th: Don't be too far right in your approach to the green, as if your short, it will likely kick horribly towards the water.
9th: Wicked slope on the green, as you look from the front, it's a ridge along the length from left to right.
12th: Right is fine, but don't go left!
13th: Aim right at the marker post, and try to avoid the left-side.
15th: 270 yard par 4, but driver is likely to leave you in a lot of trouble. Be sure to check when walking off the 5th tee where the pin is here, because if it's on the bottom, you DON'T want to be on the top tier. If you are on the top, aim to the right when putting downhill, as the right's flatter - even if the pin's on the left! Trust me!
18th: More a courtesy tip, but if you're heading towards the trees on the left some 230 yards away, call it, as it's very near the 13th tee!
I really liked the course, but you want to play it in the dry! Fingers crossed.
