Old course advice

Wish I was GUR when we played :)

it was all up and running but this maybe due to being only a few Weeks until the open took place :)

So was a great experience although my form of crappieness continued... had 1 NR blob and scored 33 points. Was pretty disappointed in that as managed to avoid all bunkers (more luck than anything) and conditions were pretty benign.

Having heard a lot of people saying the course isn't up to much I do get that... I'd go as far to say my home course is tougher as outwith the bunkers and the odd line of gorse bushes (which I went in and NRd) you arent penalised an awful lot in the rough. In general you can still usually get the ball onto it as it's quite whispy and rarely buried.

But I'd love to play again when not on mats.... playing those iconic holes that you've seen time after time is amazing... no other word for it.

To be fair though most courses this time of year the rough will be non existent.

I really want to head enter the 48hr ballot at some point, when it is off mats. I'll have to give it a go at some point

It is special and you definitely need to experience it playing off the grass properly. The rough can get more penal especially in the summer (and a wet one at that). I don't play many links courses so hard to mark it against too many courses I've played but it's definitely one I'd like to try again

One hole I'd love to play again is the road hole.... I bottled going straight over the wording and went tight to the left of the building (so about 15 feet wide of the wording) and played a great arrow drive where I was aiming which ended up in the rough. A bit more confidence and would have shaved another 30 yards to the pin and on the fairway... one of my pps did hit the actual hotel tho haha... was waiting for the window smash lol.

The 18th has to be one of the easiest golf holes I've played... driver wedge left me with a 12 foot putt which hung on the lip :-( it's no wonder the pros can practically drive it.

On the 18th, where the pros play from it is shorter than the regular yellow tee. When I played in 2015 a decent drive was just short of the road. I hit an excellent 9 iron that spun back (ripple of applause from people standing behind the green was memorable) to about 15 feet from the pin. Putt just lipped the hole.

Sounds easy. However, if they put the pin near the front it is not that easy to get near. Beyond the pin a tough two putt and if you are just short of the green it is even tougher.

I loved playing the Old Course and hope to return in 2017 or 2018.

Playing your second shot from the road, makes it a harder hole.
