On the way home from the local the other day, HID & me got into one of those rambling & rather silly conversations that tend to arise after a couple of sherbets...

The upshot of our discussion was that, to gain an advantage over my opponent in a forthcoming match, I - having a severe, and well known shortage of hair - should wear a badly fitting, and slightly misaligned, toupe - preferably a vague shade of ginger. We thought that should be sufficiently distracting to gain a shot or two?

Which got me thinking. What else could you do - within the rules, and within the bounds of etiquette - to put off your opponent and gain a slight advantage? Over to you...

Slow down play a bit?

Ask how they manage to stop at the top of the backswing before the downswing?

Ask them whether they breath in or out during their stroke?

Never tried this, but they were suggested to me.

Ha! I knew a guy who had one!

He lost every hair on his body as far as the story went and wore the worst wig you have ever seen for years.
I'm sure it helped him win a few games over the years.

I think the best story I heard was one time he was looking for his ball in some trees/bushes and parted company with his head rug on exiting said trees/bushes and it was hanging on one of the branches. Wish I'd have seen that.

Never really been one for mind games, however people have told me that I can get inside a few heads out there but I think thats due to the fact that I don't see why you should be overly nice to someone you are trying to beat. I never go out of my way to be nasty either though but sometimes people miss opportunities to say a thing or two out there.

Nothing.
If I cant beat a guy fair and square, then I would never resort to mind games...(legal or otherwise).
It is after all a game of integrity

Always try to be on my best behaviour on the course, however ask someone whos putting how he can concentrate putting through a shadow;if there is one]he wouldnt have thought about it until you said, now its on his mind affecting his concentration.

I'd get the ball in the hole in fewer strokes than them, that seems to give a slight advantage ;)

No mind games, although I'm not the most chatty if I'm in a match which some people can find awkward.

I played an old guy in match play, many years ago, when I was a young buck. Every time I banged it down the middle he remarked ''Surprising that!''

After a few holes I was so concerned with my stance/hands/swing/ball position, that all confidence was drained and I was no longer able to swing through the ball!!

Subtle but it worked!

I always try to light hearted on the course so many of the things i say arent meant to put people off.
The comments i usually like are : after a putt that is left really short of the hole:- does your husband play golf??
also another favourite is when you get right underneath your drive and it balloons up in the air and drops down only 100yards infront:- thats a great wedge shot but if you took your driver you'd have a chance of making par!

Subtle but light hearted and the embarressment of making a bad shot is enough without my chirping away. :D :D

Keep going the way you're playing and you'll break 70/80/90/100 whatever they hav'nt done. :D
