OK that statement isn't exactly correct, I duffed a hybrid off the first in front of the crowd at my driving ranges club championship today. While the pro who gives me lessons (the organiser of the event) watched. But after that I touched nothing more than a 4 iron I swear!

We were 3rd off so it was quite busy too. Not the best start to the day. Anyhow I took my medicine and holed a good putt for bogey 5. I thought I was in for a mediocre day.

Two birdies, one being a chip in plus only 3 other dropped shots see me hit the turn in 22 points and just 2 over gross.

Avington is a wonderful little 9 holer, VERY tight but offers a few long (+190 yards) par 3s to counter the short par 4s. To play 18 you use a different set of tees for the back 9. Overall par is 61,

I had the game plan to use nothing above a hybrid all the way round, when that duffed and I found I was hitting irons solidly I ditched the plan and took nothing more than a 4 iron from the tee for the next 17 holes. Boy was I glad I did!

My back 9 continued the display of great chipping, good putting (thanks Bob for your V-Easy helping me with those two!) and solid iron play. I finished it 4 over gross for 20 more points, bringing me home in 42 points, 6 over gross round of 67.

Not bad really, makes me wish I had time to play more golf!

It has opened my eyes to taking an iron off the tee more on short par 4s! If its as tight as Avington is then I will probably grab my trusty 4 iron again and leave myself a nice 7 iron in as opposed to bombing a driver and wedging out of trouble (or even having to reload!). My highlight was parring the 358 yard par 4 SI 1 with a 5 iron and a 7 iron followed by one putt and a tap in!

One interesting hole was 192 yards to a raised green protected by a bunker and has a huge dip in front. It is the only par 3 I have played that unless you can stop a ball dead from that distance you need to be playing it like a par 4! Holes like that make a fair but interesting challenge!

If you live near Winchester give Avington a go, its the Sudbrook Moor of Hampshire!

I assume you have to be a member to play in a club championship but your sig says you're not a member of a club and don't have a handicap (well you say you have an inactive handicap). Is there a story?

Sorry, hybrid off the tee? was it a bad lie or 6 inches deep?

Terror of a lie! Was sitting up on this little peg!

Rosecott, not much of a story, its the championship for the members of a local driving range. Closest I will get to a real club championship, a mix of beginner golfers of 28 handicaps, mid handicaps and the odd scratch player too.

once upon a time (about 30 years ago) I left my woods at home by mistake and player Captain's day with a 3 iron as the longest club in the bag - and won it.

admittedly a short course, played in summer conditions, but your experience doesn't surprise me.

Well played with a 3 iron. Funny really as I am probably the last person to say "ditch the driver". I believe that its probably the most forgiving club I own. Today was a refreshing experience however, when the long game decided not to wake up when I did this morning I am glad my iron play had already drunk its coffee and wolfed down a bacon roll!

Ah, I see now. There is an affiliated club on the Avington course but you're not a member of that - thought it was the club's championships.

I wandered down to a pitch and putt course attached to Lavender Park in Ascot last week. Now as long as the course the OP played but the first time in donkey's years I've played one of these. Scary how inaccurate you actually are trying to hit tiny greens with mid-short irons (7-PW). Usually I stick it on a normal sized green to around 15-20 feet but that was off some of the greens here. Distance control and accuracy something to be working on in the winter I think. Interesting exercise although putting was a mockery on mediocre (at best surfaces)

Well played. I still can't quite decide on the driver v no driver debate in my own game. I know that, providing I don't go too badly wrong, the extra distance I get from my driver means that even being in the rough leaves me with a chance of par on any hole. Also when there's a <500 yard par 5, if I hit it well and get a decent roll the green is available in two.

The problem, of course, is when it does go badly wrong. Of course, I almost ruined my idea of a 'safe 4 iron off the tee' the other day when I nearly took 7 off the tee. Our 3rd is a dogleg right, OOB on the right. Those trees are just a magnet, and despite aiming nicely down the fairway and taking my supposed safe club, I blocked my first shot right, hosel rocketed my third, hooked my fifth and eventually got my (provisional) seventh on the fairway. Luckily I found the ball I hooked so only five off the tee, but still to do that with what I thought was a safe club really makes me wonder whether I would do any worse spraying my driver everywhere.

I love playing with only irons. I remember getting some new Mizunos and playing about 25 holes (all 18 and then some!).

I'd happily never look at a wood again, although it must be said as my driving is normally the best part of my game, my scores might suffer.

"Mr Bridgestone" promised me 254 yards with my swing speed. I get tantalisingly close.

I love my driver, but I must say playing with irons only was a refreshing change.

Sadly I bet my 6 over score wont be good enough to win, with no requirement to prove handicaps I bet there will be some 44+ points in.

Days like today make me crave for a proper club membership again and the regular competative golf that comes with it.

Hang on in there mate. I did about 7 years on the wagon, enforced by HID. Enjoy what you can, when you can. There's always time.

I agree there is definitely something in this. I made a conscious decision a few months ago to leave the driver, 3w and hybrid in the bag and help improve my iron play by just hitting irons. This meant 3i off the tee most of the time on par 4s and 5s. Since doing this, I've bettered my handicap almost every rounds, and my ball striking is sooooo much better.

Today was the best example - at Blue Mountain: played the first five at +2 gross, with two three jabs. Then a big thunderstorm stalled over course, meaning all inside for 1.5 hrs. After it passed, we played the back nine only...ended up 2 under par gross!

There's no doubt that hitting the fairways regularly gets you into the subconscious routine of tee shot, then followed by fairway shot to green.

Note: this is not to say that the woods will be abandoned! They will be worked on and will reappear when they've been less naughty!

At the range this morning, found out a few of the scored. A scratch guy shot +4 gross. Only one guy will know the scores but ppl keep giving me the nod and i have even heard the odd whisper of bandit! Seems like i might be in with a decent placed finish :D
