Whatever happened to the traditional Christmas No 1?

Since that totally crap talent show X Factor came on our screens all we seem to get is record companies and the programme makers blatantly plugging and promoting non seasonal records from someone who just a matter of weeks ago was a complete randomer. Essentially hijacking the Christmas No 1 spot.

Whatever happened to the classic Christmas record? Some were naf, some were quite good. We now need a few new uns, if anything, to prevent us having to put up with the very overplayed Slade, Wizzard, Cliff bloody Richard, Wham and others.
 
I was absolutely delighted the other year when the facebook campaign helped get Rage Against The Machine to the xmas number one slot instead of Simon Cowell's latest cash cow. Hoping for more of the same this year.
 
I agree that anything is better than Cowell Inc but I'd rather try and get a decent Chrimbo ditty there as opposed to something RATM. Even push a charity record (H4H etc) or a local school choir
 
I once moonlighted over a Xmas and new year period in a chain pub (sizzler), the only music allowed was a cd of all the normal Xmas classics, issued by head office, and permanently on repeat. There are certain songs which even now make me sweat and tremble uncontrollably. Honestly, it was horrific
