Hi

I have my first golf lesson this saturday. I played for a while a few years ago with a group of friends. They all had lessons which I could not go to due to work and they all became better whilst I didnt and I gave it up. I have decided to get into golf and booked myself a few lessons to get the basics right.

I have a cheap set of clubs I bought years ago, I am 6'3" and was told by a few people that I needed to get them extended. (Most of my shots ran along the ground).

My question is, would it be worth getting the old clubs extended or should I invest in some new ones? Should I be doing this now rather than later? I presume they will measure me and look at my swing etc. but at the moment I don't really have a swing. On the other hand I don't want to get used to swinging a normal club if it will make it harder to adjust once I have them lengthened. Would you guys advise getting bigger clubs sooner rather than later?

Also, are there any 'off the shelf' longer clubs that you would recommend? I have seen Wilson make some 1" longer than normal.

Regards

I wouldn't change your clubs until after you have had some lessons as your topping of the ball probably has little to do with the length of the club. Probably more to do with stance, grip or swing.
I am a similiar height and my clubs are custom fitted +0.5 inches. I tend to top when I stand too low to the ball and lift up on the back swing.

Lots of questions there!! My advice would be see what the pro thinks when you are having your lessons, I would concentrate on sorting out a swing first before thinking about spending money on new irons. Given your size, you may need a slightly longer iron, but depending on how you swing it - maybe not.

Have the lessons then assess the situation with advice from the pro.

Welcome to the forum and keep us posted on progress.

welcome and enjoy!

go along saturday with an open mind talk to the pro and takeit from there if you want so reasonable starter clubs i think the sports hq do shorter/longer shafts as standard cost, but see what the pro thinks before doing too much.
