Watching some of the golf on both tours yesterday and was trying to see if they were playing different shots to take into account the new groove rules that have been implemented on tour.

Probably not the greatest of examples because neither course had too much in the way of rough.

Didn't really see too much of a difference when they were hitting full shots. There was plenty of spin from the fairway, which would still be expected and shots out of the "rough" weren't bounding through the back of every green.

What I did notice was that there were none (that I saw) of those 30 or 40 yd pitches that the Pros used to play so well. That one that goes in low and fast then skids twice before spinning to a halt beside the hole.

Be intersting to see if there were new balls in play to combat the groove change.

A bit on the box last night and the pro's in general didn't seem that fazed about it except when the ball came to rest in a 'scruffy deep' lie....the pundits were saying what I have said all along that it will effect the slower swingers most and the fast hitters will still impart enough to get the ball dancing so on the back of that doesn't that mean they have simply played into the monster hitter even more so?

I think it really depends on the indivdual and how they strike a ball, the type of shots they play etc. I am sure the Pro's will know how to get round this one. Im sure Jack and Ernie done OK playing in the 60's!

Faldo was saying during the golf last night that it'll make the judgment of the correct lay up on holes (i.e long par 5's or if a player is in trouble off the tee) more important. He said when he was using the type of grooves they have gone back to, it was the 40-60 half shot that caused him and his peers the most trouble
