After having struggled with 30+ foot putts due to what seems to be a mental block for most of the last year and after recently deciding to put the effort into improving my game (after neglecting golf for most of the last decade) I bit the bullet today and forked out for a new putter and retired the Ping Pal 4 that I have used since 1996/7.
Primary criteria was something heavier (the Pal 4 is incredibly light and I think that I was grappling with how hard I am having to hit it on English greens which are generally slower than Australian greens I am used to).
Ended up with a Scotty Newport after trialling it, a Ping Scottsdale and Anser 4 (both of which would have cost me a lot less than the Newport) and a Scotty Monterey for an hour or so on a practice green.
I initially expected that I would have liked the Monterey because it most closely resembled my Pal 4 in terms of weight and lie angle, but started regularly holing bombs with the Newport. Putting is all about confidence and I got back into the zone of feeling like I could hole every 40 footer which I haven't had for a long time.
Took it out on the course (which I had to myself again thanks to the Euros) and proceeded to hole a 40+ foot par saver on the first which made me laugh. I am usually pretty good from inside 15 feet and definitely pushed a few of those a couple of feet further past than I would have liked, but I had the line consistently good and think that refining the weight on shorter putts won't be too much of an issue.
Overall I felt the most confident over long putts that I have in a long time - sometimes I think that a change is as good as anything.
