As of today, I have upgraded to a set of Titleist CB's from my JPX's, don't get me wrong, I was a big fan of the JPX, and improved a great deal with them but I felt like I wanted more out of my irons than what they were able to offer.

I had the first range session with the new sticks today and was surprised at how well they travelled, as I thought the difference between the forged CB heads would be a noticeable distance away from the 'hot metal' that Mizuno used.

To my surprise the difference was very little, if at all, I then took to the Google machine to see the loft comparison and here's what came back

Titleist 710 CB's:

Loft Length
2 Iron 18° 39.50"
3 Iron 21° 39.00"
4 Iron 24° 38.50"
5 Iron 27° 38.00"
6 Iron 31° 37.50"
7 Iron 35° 37.00"
8 Iron 39° 36.50"
9 43° 36.00"
P 47° 35.75"

Mizuno JPX 800's
4 iron 5 iron 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW
Loft: 22 25 28 32 36 40 45
Length:38.25" 37.75" 37.25" 36.75" 36.25" 35.75 35.5"

As you can see the CB's average out as slightly longer which suits my eye as I'm 6'4

But there is a noticeable difference in the lofts on the clubs, with the JPX's being around a club stronger give or take.

And still, albeit on range balls there wasn't much of a difference in the distances that both sets were going.

So it gets you thinking are some of this promotional talk about getting you 'more distance' and that such as Mizuno's hot metal and with the 'fast flexing, thin face' that Callaway are pushing with the X2Hot irons really comes down to cranked lofts?

ALSO: The CB's are butter smooth!

I think your Titleist irons are cranked...I had a look at my last set:

Driving Iron: 8
Cleek: 14
Mid Mashie: 20
Mashie Iron: 24
Mashie: 30
Spade Mashie: 34
Mashie Niblick: 38
Pitching Niblick: 42
Niblick: 46
Jigger: 50

When was your last set produced? 1904?!

given that today's marketing (and science) is around increased lofts for more distance I remain even more comfortable that considering the lofts of irons in isolation (crankedloftitus) is an internet forum disease rather than anything meaningful in the real world.

99% of golfers are only interested in how easy a club is 'to hit' in their hands and nirvana is a 6 iron that feels as comfortable to hit as a 9 iron and goes as far as a 5 iron, landing like a wedge...how the manufacturer delivers this is totally irrelevant (with the possible exception of price).

I'm inclined to agree. I've always been an 'accepting sceptic' of the 'we've made them go further' approach to marketing. If someone can hit their 7 iron that's the same dimensions as my 6 iron, so what. It's being able to hit it as easily as my 8 that would make me change - and that's on the way!

Even forged clubs are getting the techno treatment apparently. I believe the Apex Pros actually have a hollow area in the heel that moves the CoG towards the toe - how that's done with a few thumps of a billet at 1100*C, I have no idea!

I would tend to disagree, I regularly flit between my old Mizuno MP62 muscle back irons and JPX825 Pro and they are a club longer if not more. Best thing about the JPX, miss the middle and it still goes the same distance, miss the middle of a forged Muscle back/Blade, it goes nowhere near.

It pretty impressive what they can do with a forged club these days. Improvements in CNC milling mean they can come up with designs that were usually only seen in cast clubs.
