I've been struggling these last few months and changing the grip to much stronger (a quiros tip I took too literally) which feels better if I was cutting down a tree but the nett result is I'm shanking (even 3 irons), thinning, duffing, pulling and push slicing (occasional good shots in-between) but nothing feels solid anymore............If your swing is basically sound I think you can attribute a lot of faults to a poor grip, as Faldo once said "Good golf starts with a good grip"

This Mark Crossfield video sums it up for me so hopefully I can get back to normal asap, I thought it would be usefull for us all.....

I spent, retty much, all winter weakening my grip.

As Bob will attest, I had a very strong, Zach Johnson esque, grip which was casuing me no end of problems.

My current grip is now like this:

Still undecided with my right hand position but it does feel much better than my previous grip.

looks good Gareth, much more neutral, you probably couldnt have played with blades well with your old strong grip.
I saw a great grip test last night, I'll post it up as soon as I find it, it affirmed I'm far too strong as I thought.

Nothing wrong with a slightly stronger grip..... with the LEFT hand. Some can see 3 or more knuckles. Not good to put your RIGHT hand under the grip at all though. Not everyone is suited to just a plain ol' neutral grip.

Don't like the look of that grip particularly Gareth as your left looks weak and your right looks strong.

I would agree a neutral grip is no Panacea!

Gareths left had does look a tad weak but he is still working on it

I think every golfer should spend 10-20 mins a week on the grip alone, whatever their level! All it takes is a quick reference to a video, a mirror and a club...

I remember stories that pros used to tell that they spent hours as a junior watching TV while just gripping and regripping a club until it felt natural. Things like that set them apart from the causal golfer.

I am a firm believer in home practice! 5-10 mins a day on just the basics make all the difference to range and course practice sessions (ie no wasted balls and time) and eventually affect competition scores.

today it's the grip - yesterday you posted

"videod myself today.....OMG:eek: my swing comes in around and under my shaft plane then over the top of it on the downswing, no-wonder I J Arthur and top, thin, push and pull (some long straight ones to as 2 wrongs sometimes do make a right), that was a nasty and depressing wake up call, but the camera doesnt lie"

can I tactfully (or not) suggest you are over thinking your approach to the game and that you haven't a chance of swinging well with all this in your head.....

You seem to like quotes - Leadbetter once said that he had only ever met one golfer who could think about more than one simple swing thought at any time, and still put a swing on the ball.......that golfer was Faldo.

think about it - or rather, don't.

Point I was making was my grip change IMO is the causal effect, think you're misinterpreting them as two separate posts about 2 separate issues, they are totally linked as explained in the video. Unless you understand and analyse what you do right or wrong you will never improve, and we all want to improve....

this may have followed from them being on 2 seperate forums, in 2 seperate thread, started at 2 different times - with no reference to each other........

oh, and the point I was making was that if you stand over the ball 'questioning' you have no chance of improving! What was Einstein's golf handicap btw?

DV, i struggle with grip on a regualr basis, it seems something that is addressed regular in my lessons., but i think ive finally found the cure.

Ive recently purcahsed new TM TP CB irons, and as they are a recent model also opted to buy a matching spare 6i in the same spec. this cost me all of £19 from ebay, i then visited the man who does my regripping and shafting to have a training grip fitted to the spare 6i. Now every time i go to the range, i hit 20 ish balls before heading to the tee with the 6i that has the training grip fitted. It gets my hands used to being in the right place. and on the plus site i dont scratch my nice new shineys on the range mat, win win.
