never played a links course

Drawboy i could be here all night ,have a look at the Dundonald Meet ,John_Findlay made a video of the day it shows links golf at its best.

links is nice.
takes a lot of getting used to if your used to parkland thought.
Iv always played at parkland courses so used to struggle when playing team games at links courses. but then again links teams normally werent so hot at out parkland course.
Youve got to try it especially when its windy, i find links golf needs a little more thought especially from within 100 yards

can not beleave that you guys have not played links golf
you should be ashamed with yourselfs!!!!

rain coming in and hitting you like stones!!!

Umm...

Maybe a lack of the above might help!

In my opinion, you're missing part of the spirit of golf. Not to get too sentimental, I find that playing a links can really help you experience the variety and "golfer with/against elements" side of golf. I love it.

One of the things you might experience is hitting ludicrously long drives for 8 or 9 holes with the wind and then finding that par 4s become par 5s on the way home. You might experience wide open spaces with subtle natural hazards rather than those man made and manicured. You will experience the wind. You might experience all year round playing conditions and greens that run and roll for ever. The turf may well be dry and sandy - inviting those long irons where the ball is whisked off the top and mid irons where you crunch down and through to get the control that you need.

And - if, like me, you play most of your golf in the park, you will balloon many shots in the wind and marvel at the locals who drill irons and chip and run using the contours and natural rise and fall of the course with ease.

I thoroughly recommend Hunstanton and Royal West Norfolk (my two local links) if you ever visit Norfolk.

It is qunitessential golf. It playing the game in is barest form against the elements where a vivid imagination is vital. Its about manufacturing shots in the conditions and realising that aiming for the middle of the green is not always the percentage shot.

It has to be experienced rather than explained and there a many ood links courses around the UK and Ireland that aren't overly expensive and will give you everything you are looking for.

I have never played a links course, so for all you that have what am I missing?

I havent either Drawboy....I dont know if anyone on the site here is familiar with it but im playing the Ballybunion New course here in southern Ireland next month with my dads work golf society.....Im looking forward to it but a little sceptical at the same time.......I must practice on keeping my ball under the wind.... :D

First time i played it i hated it, lost a few balls couldnt stop anything on the greens, but now having played 7 or 8 of some of the best links courses in Ireland i have come to see it as the best form of golf where if u keep it on the short stuff u have 2 or 3 different options on how to play your next shot the 30 yard putt from off the green lots of varaition plus there are no trees to get caught behind.
