Appart from it being rank and totally abused their balls are the worst i have ever seen, EVER. 2.50 for 50 balls. 25 at least must have been pure smoth like ping pong balls, total waste. They others are practically hollow! I hit 4 and barely scraped past 100yards with a 9 iron. Started to get frustrated and tried to muller a few things that it couldnt possibly be the balls, they can be that bad. Anyway, found an actually golf ball in the bucket (sort of - dunlop DDH) and give that a smack. It sailed about 50 yards further. Not happy, wont be returning to hit [****] balls like that again. AHHHH!

My club's range is quite the opposite.

£3.50 for 50 balls but they are 90 click Srixon's (yellow!) and are a joy to hit and always very good quality.

The other one I go to at Brickhampton Court has better mats (just been replaced) but the balls aren't quite as good.

Sorry, this post was of no help whatsoever :D

Bloody hell at our place you have to take your own, shocking as it is you also have to collect them as well!!

Much prefer having the option to practice off mats or grass and knowing your bad shots will have to be collected by yourself makes you concentrate more.

At our place they balls are pretty average top flite or srixon range balls, and the mats are okay, but the best bit is that they are free (unlimited) for members. Add that to the fact that my membership is only £522 per year with free golf at all Crown Golf clubs (albeit after 2pm at weekends, all day on weekdays), I get a pretty good deal. :) The joys of being under 30. :)

As with Jon's post above, this post will be of absolutely no use to anyone but me.... :P

this could be a description of one of my local ranges. the balls are an absolute disgrace. the range at my own track is little better, haven't been there for an age but I have heard they've replaced the mats - not before time if true. Both are 'shed' ranges with those awful hard mats.

There are also an AG range (10 miles) and a DG range (16 miles). Both are powered and heated, balls are in good nick and best of all the DG range has a bar and a restaurant.

The club ranges can't hope to compete with that but it seems they've just given up.

Where clubs should be able to compete is with putting, pitching, chipping and bunker facilities - unfortunately I've not found a good one yet. Oddly both clubs have managed to keep really good coaches.

Are you a junior member? It says £899 on your club website for a 'seasonal member'.

Looks like a decent course off the blues... nice yardages.

No, they do an 'intermediate' membership for people between 18 and 29. It's exactly the same as a full membership but about half the price. I think it's an incentive to get more young golfers to join clubs. I think it edges its way upwards as you approach 30 and then you pay full fees.

I think the seasonal membership is something like march - october only or something like that.

Off the blues when it's windy is a bit cheeky, I'll tell you that. I heard the other day they are going to lengthen one of the par 3s to over 200 so they can apply to host regional qualifying for the Open.

I use an excellent range in Maidenhead. Good quality (if that isn't a misnomer) Srixon range balls, very, very good mats even if the tees are fractionally too high and heated bays. Plenty of targets to aim at and the tucked away location means you never get idiots mucking around. It's used by golfers all trying to improve their game and not teenagers trying to smack it out of the park or thinking they are Happy Gilmore
