Good morning fellow golferino's,

Played my first 'winter' round on Sunday morning. Teed off at 7.24am in what could only be described as Arctic conditions.

Frozen tees, frozen fairways, frozen greens.

After the first 9 all was just a wet frost but it got me thinking about which golf ball is best suited for these conditions.

There was absolutely no roll on the fairways. Despite having a layer of frost of them the ball just plugged in and trickled forward slightly. The greens were also very soft but because of the frost they were too slippy to stop the ball dead, even from a high pitch.

So as I say I was wondering what type of ball is best suited to these icy conditions. Do you try for extra distance, or do you try your damndest to get that little white ball spinning it's behind off to stay on the green as best it can?

Any recommendations? I'm getting bored of my Diablos.

I'd say anything that gets the ball high and flying. Keep it off the ground as long as possible. If the greens are that soft then you could stop a Molitor on them so don't worry about spin.
Diablos should be pretty good for this I'd have thought.

It's all about compression my friend. How a ball performs for you is dependant on how much you can compress it. The tour balls have high compression and it therefore takes a faster swing speed to compress them to the core and gain the advantage. In colder conditions the ball gets hard and therefore more difficult to compress so you should use a softer ball which will hopefully allow you to keep the ball in the air longer.

The performance around the greens isn't as good but if the greens are soft it's easy to stop them, if they're frozen you ain't gonna stop them anyway.

The right ball for you is gonna be trial and error but you should probably be looking at something like a Bridgestone e6 or NXT Tour.

Your handicap is 21 and ur worried about spin, to much tv me thinks

Hawkeye pretty much covers it. The colder it is the harder it will be to get the ball to perform at optimum. My personal favourite is the AD333 as it tends to fly pretty high (high carry) and still has a fair bit of spin control for approaches and chips. And they are cheap enough if you lose them in frosty rough or under leaves

I see the Forum Use Detectives have been at work again. Changing an offensive title here and making it safe for all to browse.

yer just a FUD ;)

Aye, okay, just me puting my foot in it again.

Too early in the morning with that post. Shouldn't do that 'til after the first coffee of the day ;)
