My brother - the quintessential bandit/handicap protector

Well, I bit the bullet and have just rung the clb and asked to speak to the handicap secretary to be told he's not in, so i've just spoke to a member of the committee.

Basically, he said they cant do anything as they would need the cards my brother has completed, signed & handed in, without the cards there isnt a thing they can do.

He said he would tak note and speak to the handicap secretary though and see if there was anything he didnt know about.

I feel a complete *** for grassing on my own flesh & blood but I can't let him do this :( :( :( :(

I think that's the right thing to do. If you did nothing you would be seen to be condoning his behaviour.

Even if the handicap sec does nothing, you know you've done your bit.

I'd also mention it to your brother, coz if anything is said, and he thinks you've done it behind his back he'll start having a pop at you, when it's him that should be feeling sheepish.

You don't have to make a confrontation of it, just say that he knew how wrong you think he is, and you had to say something for your own peace of mind. Personally I'd say that the guy you spoke to doesn't think they can do much until he starts handing in cards, and why doesn't he put a couple in now, coz he'll only get cut a couple of shots, he'll still have plenty in hand to win, and he'll be less likely to be accused of being a bandit if he does walk away with it. Does that make sense ?

I'm sorry about your situation. Not a nice position to be put in.

I don't think there was anything else you could have done with a clean conscience.

It is a horrible situation, not one I want to be in again no!

To be honest, I dont care if he is reg on here and see's it as everything i've said on here, i've said far worse to his face lol
 
For its worth I think you've done the right thing and even if he does get a bit funny with you at least you can tell him you play the game with the integrity it demands. I agree with the comment about the opposition in the finals who have played well to get this fire and are going to run into an impossible situation. Even if he is cruising and loses the odd hole "on purpose" he'll still clean up with ease at least 4&3. If he went at full tilt he could embarrass the opponents and that would be even worse.
 
Not a nice situation Keef, must've taken a lot of thought to decide to do what you've done, and I completely agree with you.
I think it's just a mindset.

I take it as an insult to my game if I get a 0.1

Well done for being a decent member of the human race, and golfing fraternity, although I fear Alex1975 will be along to put over the pikey point of view shortly

I'm sat here stewing over it and have been now for the last 2 hours, and the more I think about it the worse its getting :(

Golf is a gentlemens game where honesty prevails. People call the Police against their own family sometimes and get them banged up, fortunately we're only talking sport here so you should be able to sleep comfortably.
 
Keef I commend your attitude to all this , I know it must have been a tough decision but ultimately its got to be the right one and you know it deep down.

If nothing comes of it then you've done your bit and its now in the clubs hands.

A virtual pat on the back for you
 
Speaking to the the handicap sec/committee isn't going to do nothing without the proof, but a word in the clubhouse to the other members would probably suffice.

Being labelled a cheat and in this case he certainly is, is more embarassing than a bandit. I'm sure the majority of lads in every club are honest and play to the rules but there is always a minority who will win at all costs.

Hopefully he'll meet his match in the final and get turned over.

I dont know how people are motivated by 'winning' - to me, 'winning' is when I get a handicap cut, and if I Win the Medal or Stableford as well, thats just a bonus.
I'm in a Final too in the next couple of weeks, and will be playing a 5 Handicapper, but I know without hesitation that my 10 shots are correct.

Surely his reputation and scoring will be becoming 'known' around the members he plays with ?

Whilst, I don't agree with what your brother's done at all. I would have had it out with him first in full before going to the committee.

After all, he is your brother and when golf and the golf club are gone, he'll still be your brother.

What's he doing is totally unacceptable, but it is pretty obvious that the handicap secretary can't just give someone a massive chop on one (or even two or three) persons' say so.

I would much prefer to make him change his mind and, if you can't, constantly shame him afterwards and tell him, at every opportunity, that any of his victories are worthless until he regrets it.

I agree. It seems that he hasn't been guilty of this before, so it's just the lure of getting his name up in lights that is twisting his sense.

If you can persuade him that accepting a cut will still give him a chance of winning, but will also show him as being seen to be doing the right thing, then everyone wins.

In the long run, he wont want to be thought of as a handicap protector, and once someone has a bad name it's virtually impossible to change it.

Best he sorts things out while he still has a chance.

What you're doing is in his own best interest - just make sure he sees that, and I'm sure he'll see the light.

To me, winning is everything, golf, football, pool, badminton, bowling, whatever I play. However winning to me is winning fairly within the rules and without mugging it afterwards too much either.

I can see no appeal in a victory that you know you cheated to achieve.

I can see no point in winning if you have cheated, end of.
