Muirfield....Tradition or out of touch.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

My wife is a member of a LADIES ONLY gym ..... do you hear as blokes whinging about equal rights and trying to get them to change their rules ?? NO ...

Imagine being responsible for cleaning the seats of the exercise bikes seats at that club!! :o :D

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Did anyone read the interview with Peter Alliss in last months Golf World? Now that is a brilliant piece of journalism, a fantastic interview, he talks about sexism, human rights, prisons.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant interview and I doubt anyone will beat it this year. The man is wonderful.

GM, he's gotta be worth another interview, clear a few pages for a legend.

i read that Crawford and I thought exactly as you do. Superb interview giving his honest opinion ,which so happened to mirror my own on a lot of subjects.

Thats fair enough...me personally I'm not on about equal rights tbh. If you go with your wife, she has to go for sarnies while you pop along for a meal. What is that about, how stupid, how backward. What are they protecting, what 250 year old bearded poke nose dick brought that in, and reading the rules it's clear the no smoking LAW was a real sickener to these cigar smoking zimmer swingers. Yes, they had to comply, what a shame.

What about the girls not playing themselves. What are they going to do that needs a guy with them to watch over...lesbian acts. Yeh it happens at every other course.

One of the guys did an hour with him yesterday at Outon Hall - just seen the transcript. Very entertaining

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Absolutely superb Mike, the man is a genius! If the interview is half as good as GW one then it will be a rip roaring success!

In fact if he stood for PM after that interview he gave I would vote for him.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

No problem with it from me. It's their club they can invite who they like. Why shouldn't they? Does it really make that much of a difference?

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

I think any club (golf or otherwise) should be able to set its own rules. There is too much interference or PC worrying these days.
So clubs should be able to bar racial minorities if they want to..? At the risk of getting off-topic, I hate political correctness as much as the next man but surely openly discriminatory practices should be stopped?

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Why?

You chose who you allow into your own home!

Quite right, thecraw.

I would never be a member of a club that has such policies as Muirfield. It is, however, a private club and, aside from employment laws, they can allow or refuse anyone they so wish. Isn't this the right to freedom of association and assembly? The only way to change such a club is for people to stop joining it.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Just curious...what's the difference between deciding who can and can't work for you and who can and can't join your club? If private clubs can apparently do as they please, why do they have to abide by discrimination law in one case and not the other?

they can allow or refuse anyone they so wish
Interesting. There was a recent court case where the BNP were forced to change their constitution because it barred 'non indigenous Britons' from membership, so it seems they don't have the right to bar people from joining their "club". I'm sure a lawyer could tell us how a political party differs from a golf club but on the face of it they seem pretty similar, in that you don't have to join if you don't like their practices.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Good points, Muttlee

I'm not a lawyer but I'm willing to dig myself a hole…

1. I would say that membership of a club and employment at that club are two totally different concepts in law.

2. I believe the BNP case was centered on the fact that, in order to work for the BNP you had to a member. As the membership of the BNP is restricted on racial grounds, they were also guilty of employement descrimination.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/jun/23/bnp-membership-policies-legal-threat

It's not very clear though is it?

Just found this from the Race Relations Act, which clarifies things a little…

'A private club, does not provide "goods, facilities or services to the public or a section of the public", if the rules of the club provide for nomination and personal selection and there is nothing to indicate that those rules are a mere formality'

I assume that private clubs do not provide a service to the public - the service is to their members. The BNP, as a political party, probably does.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Very interesting...thanks for looking into that. I suppose if Muirfield announced that they would only employ members from now on, they would end up in the same boat as the BNP. Pretty unlikely bedfellows!
