Have a good read at this………….is it not about time they were told to wake up, apart from probably breaking the discrimination laws.

"Ladies may only play if accompanied by a gentleman player" "There are no lunch facilities for ladies but sandwiches and drinks can be provided in the Captain's Room, if ordered in advance"

All from this great club http://www.muirfield.org.uk/page/Visitors_Notes_of_Guidance.aspx

Stuck up snobs in my opinion. Two years ago, Justin Timberlake turned up for a game, but was knocked back because they wouldn't let his maw walk round with him.
He ended up at our place where there is no problem on our public links.
The men of Carnoustie went hungry that day as the course was full of wummin once word got out.

Far too liberal.
It is quite victorian!

I didnt like this either, I prefer to know who my tip is going to.
Individual members of staff should not be tipped. However, if you wish to show your appreciation to the staff then a gratuity may be left at the (cash) desk in the Dining Room which will be added to the Staff Gratuity Fund.

Good atricle.

I am not saying that i agree with not letting women in the club house.

But i think it is very refreshing to see a club (not just any club a great club) standing by its traditions before the whole country got tied up with political correctness.

It works both ways.

A sign at Lundin Ladies Golf Club

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Outdated in my opinion.

It is not only the rules themselves but that attitude that women are in some way inferior that is offensive.

At Portmarnock GC where it is men only membership lady golfers are made welcome at the club and also get to play at reduced rates. A single sex club with a more up to date approach which shows there can be a balance even if they don't want lady members.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Yeah, but Lundin also has a gentlemens club as well does it not?

Does kilspindie not have the male lockers in the bar so as they have a reason to keep the ladies out?

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

I don't have a problem with it, the rules are there for all to see prior to anyone planning a visit.

Totally agree - if you do not like it, do not play there. There are 1,000's of other courses to play.

I have to say - from a purely personal viewpoint - I think any club (golf or otherwise) should be able to set it's own rules. There is too much interference or PC worrying these days. That is the point of living in a free state, with a free press. Why should a club owned and run by members, who ask for nothing from anyone be dictated to by government or any other organisation.

I have played Muirfield many times as a guest and a visitor and can assure you the members want nothing from anyone, they simply want to run the club they way they always have.

Incidentally, Muirfield is NOT a golf club. It is a Gentlemens Club that has a golf course as a facility for use by its members.

There is no proshop, no resident professional, they have no competitions, club champions etc etc. I also believe they are NOT affiliated to the R&A. So they do not have to comply with anything or anybody.

They hold Opens because the course is so good and they run it so well. Interesting.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

While I’m all for tradition and this political correct pi$h rips my knitting. But, females can’t eat with the males….whats that all about……and they can only get sandwiches, not lunch.

Off you go darling, I'll be back after lunch, tara.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Nice to see that in these days of liberal namby pamby ideals there is still a place where a woman can be treated like a woman. What the heck are they doing on a golf course anyway? they have ironing and washing to do not to mention getting the tea ready for when the man of the house gets home after a hard days work.

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

I have no problem with the rules at Muirfield as they are. Some traditions should continue without the PC brigade getting involved. However, there is one tiny problem with this...

Played there last year and told my wife all about the "Men Only" views etc...

Her response: "Sounds a bit gay to me..."

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

I have to say I can see both sides but I'm more in favour of letting them get on with it. As others have said at the end of the day it is a gentlemans club (same as say the Reform Club in Pall Mall) and so should be allowed to set its own rules.

I do think extending it to the catering side of things and restricitng them to sandwiches is a bit short sighted especially if you do play as a mixed couple (visiting etc). You know what you're getting before you go so pays your money and makes your choice

Re: Muifield....Tradition or out of touch.

Did anyone read the interview with Peter Alliss in last months Golf World? Now that is a brilliant piece of journalism, a fantastic interview, he talks about sexism, human rights, prisons.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant interview and I doubt anyone will beat it this year. The man is wonderful.

GM, he's gotta be worth another interview, clear a few pages for a legend.
