Bournemouth and Swansea have announced that fans booking tickets in future can have the gender neutral title MX instead of Mr, Mrs or Ms. Now, leaving aside people's views on gender fluidity, isn't it about time that we cleaned up the whole title situation and if so how do we do it?

For men it is very simple. Once you get past 16 you are referred to as Mr. Should females drop the Mrs and simply become an all encompassing Ms? Would that simplify matters? Some women get very humpy about being called Ms. Is there another title that could be introduced that covers a formal greeting, title etc for ladies?

Incidentally, regarding the Mx, how is it pronounced? Is it literally, M-X, ie M-X Lannister, or Mex Lannister or in an entirely different way that flows off the tongue a little easier?
 
I read this and it's another example of PC stupidity. You are either male or female, you have either male or female sex organs. You may choose your sexuality and you may choose to change your sex but you will still be either male or female.

Or, like the runner (name not mentioned deliberately), you can be both?

Why do you need to be either for booking a footy ticket? Surely a surname and an initial is sufficient.

Not everyone is simply either male or female even by a purely scientific stand point due to differences in the sex chromosomes.

The only stupidity here is your own.

PC stupidity? Why can't someone be called whatever they want to be called? Being a Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms or MX should be a personal choice. I don't like being called Mr, my name is Brian.

If you want PC stupidity, how about the mother who wants Disney's Beauty and the Beast banned because the Beast kisses Beauty without asking permission.

Re-read the first post. I'm trying to keep off gender itself and how it may or may not move and keep this to titles. Probably a vain hope.

Brian, I have never referred to myself as Mr Lannister, he he, in my life. I really don't like titles of any form, Mr, Dr, Prof, Sir, Lord etc, but when filling in a form there is always a box that asks if you are Mr, Mrs, Ms, etc. and if it is an online form you can not get past that without ticking something. Never, ever, when someone asks my name do I state, Mr Tyrion Lannister.

I don't know but I'm not going to get myself annoyed by allowing the small number that may be to give themselves a title they are comfortable with.

Thanks for that, I'm fully aware of the differences between sex and gender roles but that is not what the OP is referring to.

And as murph says, why do you need anything more than a surname and initial to book a football ticket?

I suppose Mx is fine if someone really wants to be referred thus, though I do think it's a bit silly. I think it should stop there though tbh and not escalate the way the choice of gender itself people can pick from nowadays has. Link here if you have no clue what I'm talking about.

As to the pronounciation of "Mx" I'd probably say something along the lines of "Mucs" if I had to say it out loud. Dunno if that's how it's supposed to be said or not! :confused::p

Interesting article.

I frequently fill in forms that ask for my title (Mr, Mrs, Miss etc) and ask for my sex (male or female) or my gender (male or female). I have never filled out a form that asks for my gender AND my sex. How does that work?

To be honest, I find it all very strange. My wife is a sociologist though and often tells me off when I say something insensitive on the subject!

I guess you answer the question of gender by giving your title and you answer the biological question by answering the question of your sex. So perhaps those two questions give all the info needed?
