Well brought a second hand set of MP59 out of American Golf. Lovely looking clubs not a mark on them. Standard set with stiff s300 shafts in. however where before i was hitting a PW 140-150 yards for example with my old set of wilson fat shafts im having to hit an 8 iron now. At the other end of the scale i was hitting my 4iron 210 - 220 yards in my old Wilson set I am now hitting 170- 180 with the MP59's. They look and feel great but they seem to go no where do I need to get fitted with another shaft what worries me ill spend a whole load of cash improving the shaft and it will only make a small difference to the length. Have any of you guys had the same problem. I know length isn't everything but this seems a bit extreme.

Your wilson yardages are very long '140 -150 PW' thats longer than most Tour pros hit it, a reasonable PW would be nearer 110/120 yards and an 8 iron around 140 / 150.
Sounds like your MP59's are just about right. The Wilsons sound incredible.

I agree with Brian. Your previous yardages seem pretty outstanding.

If they feel great and go straight then you should have no problem playing them. Have you compared ball flight, spin rate and trajectory as well?

there can be a fair bit of difference in yardages if you change the shafts to one more suited. I gained 15 yards carry on my 6 iron!

The point of irons is not to hit them as far as possible, but to be able to hit them to the place you want to hit them to. If you can do that better with a 59 with a 6 on the sole compared to a Wilson with a 7 on the sole, then all is well.

The 59s are likely to be more lofted for a given club, and possibly slightly shorter, than the Wilsons.

Play with them for a while before doing anything rash.

Wilson clubs have very strong lofts compared to mizuno

The PW from Wilson is like the 9 iron from my Mizuno

Even so those distances sound too long to me

PW for most is 120 /100 yds

You may find that you need to look at your wedges as i did when i changed from Wilson

Took out 48, 52 and 60 and replaced with 52 and 58 as my PW is nearer in loft to my 52 compared to my old Wilson set.

just seen a guy review the new nike covert driver. he was hitting it 240 with a 106mph clubhead speed. unless you are a mahoosive hitter then you wont be hitting a 4 iron 220 at this time of year. this guy was in sunny manchester by the way !

I have a set of MP59's & I don't find them to be short, in fact they seem a full club longer than my previous MP52's.

When you say you hit your 4 iron 210-220 yards when is this, I assume in summer?
If you are comparing this to the yardages you are getting now then I'm not surprised the MP59's aren't going as far. You will probably lose 10-15 yards from the cold conditions, plus your muscles will be cold which can have an even greater effect on this number. I can lose anywhere from 1-2 club lenghts in winter so I don't pay too much attention to how far I'm hitting the ball this time of year.

do you have your old wilsons still? so you can measure the shaft length..

i just bought some mizuno mp53 previously had mp60's

the mp53's are noticeably shorter in distance, reason being my old mp60's were custom fit 1 inch longer shaft where as the mp53#s are standard length just a few degrees upright.

Didn't think 1 inch would make such a difference but it certainly does, to me anyway

I went from Wilson Fat Shaft Deep Red to Mizuno MP 53 a few years ago and lost yards. I have no idea now how many yards but there are lots of reasons why.

Loft, hotter face, time of year, length of shaft...

Thanks guys, Someone mention it could be the condition but i took both sets out the other day to compare but theres a huge difference in length. Very Odd. I dont mind having to go up a club but for instance theres a hole on my course which is 148 Yards always hit a wedge into it but with the MP59'S im hitting a full out 8 iron in. I dont mind that but the wedge is always going to be more accurate than an 8. Is for me anyways. Just dosn't make sense. Im using them at the moment but keeping my 4 Iron Wilson i n the bag for the second shot into par 5's otherwise i have no chance of getting near the hole in two.

I would like to understand this. When you hit your pitching wedge 145 yards what is the ball flight.. Very high or low?

Without wanting to start a flame war, 140-150 with a PW is inaccurate at best. Not even the tour pro's with fully spec'd clubs and fast clubhead speed get that. Wilson were synonimous with cranking their lofts but even so I just don't get those distances. I think the Mizuno are far more realistic in terms of distance. Irrespective of whehter you can or can't but wedges that far, my advice would be to get out onto the practice ground and a GPS device and see what the Mizuno's come out

If all else fails, you can get the lofts adjusted on the MP59's as they are forged clubs. Get the PW cranked down to 40* and it shouldn't be a problem hitting it 150 yards.
