I've done a lot of mountain biking in my time... no competition stuff as it was for fun only after years of competitive kayaking and swimming...

It's a great sport, but can be pretty dangerous. I've ridden down off a mountain with a broken kneecap sticking out through a big hole in my leg in the not too distant past!

stuff like this...

It can be as demanding on you as you make it. Lots of nice hills round your neck of the woods to make it interesting... in fact, i'll see if i can find a pic i had somewhere of some nutter biking the cliffs of moher!!!!

here it is... i'd suggest you don't attempt this as your first ride, as it could be your last!!!!

Wouldn't have the bottle to that. Have been using my bike on the roads and cycle paths for the last month ,3 times a week and have noticed a big difference try to do 15 miles each time , it sure gets the blood pumping.

The dam picture above is the closest i've come. There was 8 of us that went across that dam and there was 1 foot of flood water bursting across the top of the dam! It's the most vertigo inducing thing that i've cycled and i don't think i'd want to do it again! It was a looooooong way down as the wee railing was not even at waist height once on the bike and riding.

The cliffs of moher ride was incredible. I think there's footage on youtube as well if you google it.

I ride a mountain bike sometimes, but I wouldn't say I do mountain biking. It's just I prefer the off-road tracks on my ride to and from work. (They're actually smoother than the damn pot-holed roads these days!!)

Another MTbiker here, altho havent ridden much at all in last 18mths since Golf got its hooks into me again.

Done loads of Coast2Coasts, as well as Coed Y Brenin, and a few trips to Morzine in summer etc, which is the Dogz, with few uphills ! :D

My Stumpjumper keeps looking longingly at me in the garage, but its my son who's taking it to the Alps this summer.

Great sport though

Sure is! I remember a few years back when someone i know stopped biking because golf got so addictive. I didn't get it back then.

I do now. It's now very rarely that i head out for a day in the hills with my bike :(

I used to do a fair bit myself a few years back. I've been to Wolftrax as well, great fun and a dam sight quieter than Glentress.

I've also done the Kinlochleven dam run but thankfully I've never encountered the water as high as that.

I built up my own bike last year by building it bit by bit when I got some OT or had spare cash. I found it was great fun scouring ebay etc looking for bargains. I also stripped bits off of an old Gary Fisher Sugar bike that I had in the shed and sold that frame on to finance my new project as well.

It turned out well, a second hand Kinesis Maxlight frame was the basis of the project which I got off of a friend so I knew its history. I topped it up with mainly XTR running gear and got an absolute steal on a set of Magura Ronin forks.

Great fun to do and I got all the bits I wanted. Its a very fast and light hard tail which I don't use nearly enough!

Thanks for all the replies chaps.....
The reason i ask as most will know i retired from playing ball last year from a bad achilles injury up until then very fit...Have got a little lazy of late but my mates are big into the MB scene....Im about to buy a hard tail and havent a big budget...Only 500€ with my current bike which is a Trek 4500 non disc..im getting 300 for this against the the 2 bikes below...

Im thinking of either a Giant Talon0 Or a Trek 6000.....Im still on the fence with these....
Im not completely new to the sport just a little rusty through injury but im mad to get back mountain biking at least 2 times a week for the summer....I need to build up the muscle in the injured leg again and get my fitness back to or above what it was......
Has anyone any thoughts on the above bikes.....
Im open to other makes but ideally i would like something decent entry level but with a capacity to upgrade once parts start breaking...
Thanks again. ;)

Get your work to sign up to the Cycle to Work Scheme.

You basically get your bike half price as your given the tax back. Buy a £800 it costs you £400.

It seems like a great idea and if I needed a bike I would jump on it in a flash.
