what about GIANT bikes? any good? saw a few on evilbay and gumtree at reasonable prices with shimano gearing which a mate said were good gears?

Shimano gears are pretty much industry standard. Like everything there are "models" that increase in quality and inevitably, price.
IIRC Giant used to be a good make but were bought by a bigger company in early 2000's and are now mass produced cack, much like British Eagle went.
Still a huge fan of Marin bikes even though I can't do downhill anymore and don't like road cycling.

Well as per the initial thoughts, has been sat in the garage for months and never used by myself, who would have thought!!

Anyone want to buy a bike?!
