After watching Golf Night with other day Mark Roe stated that the most technological advancement was the golf ball over the golf clubs.

This made me think about this question......

Which do you think you could hit further:-

A golf ball from 2009 and a club from 1929

OR

A club from 2009 and a golf ball from 1929

I would definitely say the latter.

A club from now and a ball from then, I would've thought the way the ball is struck by clubs these days would get anything moving a lot quicker & further than anything from back when Bobmac was a lad ;)

I'm with Hapless on this one. Only 'cos I played in a Hickory golf day at my club a few years ago and was really surprised at how far I could hit the ball. Apparently the secret with Hickory shafted clubs, so as not to break them, is to swing easy! Maybe I should remember that in the medal on Sunday.

On Sunday in the medal, why not try and swing like an old man like me, you might get it out there 200 yds+ :)

I'd happily take a swipe at a ProV1 with an old club - it'll either go miles or I'd have a handful of splinters!

What WERE the golfballs like in 1929? Had they learned to put dimples on them yet? :)

Another thing that I recently read was that the R&D departments are now not far away from developing a ball that the average golfer will be able to hit 400+yrds EASILY!!

Surely this is taking things too far? We'll be taking a 9iron on 200yrds Par 3's and may be able to drive a Par 5!

I would think the old club/new ball combo would be easier to hit better

I do quite fancy trying out that Hickory Golf which if i remember righly Neil Tappin did a article on a good few months ago at Musselburgh

Old club , new ball for me.

if you can swing the old club correctly (like Uncle Bob says) then you'll get almost as good a result from an old Persimmon wood as an R9. But the other way round - I reckon the ball would fall apart!!

Without a shadow of doubt, the old club and new ball. Hickory sticks could smash an old ball about 200-220 yds at a push I reckon, the modern ball caught sweetly would travel a lot further indeed.

this is my 2nd tim around typimg this, changed my mind already and at the monent to be honest i haven't made up my mind... both have thier pros and cons. i think over a full round of golf most people would pick the modern clubs old ball combo tho, i know youll sacrifice spin and distance but one must remeber that that workability and ability to put on severe spin is prob not available with older hickory clubs... (feel free to correct me if im wrong, ive never had any experience of them)
