Monarch Airlines in Administration

It could be but currencies fluctuate all the time. If your business model is dependent on a strong pound with no contingencies for it dropping then failure is coming sooner rather than later. The counter argument is that the strength of the pound in other times coupled with low fuel prices shpukd have allowed a build up in reserves to ride the storm.

Currency is way down the list relative to occupancy, average ticket prices, time at gate, fuel prices (see earlier) and airport fees!

If you cant fill the plane at the right prices- stuffed!
If you can get licences for attractive routes - stuffed!
If you are less efficient than competitors - stuffed!

Heck, a train from Newport to Paddington is over £100 in the morning and its packed cos there's no proper jobs over here.... I flew to Faro and back 2 weeks ago for £68 return. Is a train more expensive to run than a plane?

So it’s basically the #1 thing on a list of four reasons on your link but you reckon it’s wrong to use the word “main” to describe it.

Me thinks your being a bit selective as it states in the paragraph along with the Brexit line "prices had been depressed for some time" as one of the three other reasons in #1 alone so really I was just disagreeing with your choice of the word "main" but it's only my take on your definition.

Wouldn't mind that, just a shame you felt the need to do so with a barbed comment. Anyway, I didn't want to turn it into another Brexit thread - just couldn't let the "don't mention Brexit" line pass since it clearly is a factor to one extent or another.

Airline that's been on the edge for a number of years; too many things wrong.

Wrong cost model with wrong structure of borrowing plus wrong routes at wrong time.

Management caught looking the wrong way- Brexit is not a factor here.

Wrong - weak business couldn't survive the devaluation of the pound after the Brexit vote. Would it have gone bust anyway? Quite probably. But please don't pretend it wasn't a factor.

their holidays were more than others when I looked so went elsewhere.

Sorry to disagree but the slide down the slippery slope was already underway some years ago. Their loan structure on their aircraft was too leveraged and without enough capital and incorrect hedging on dollars it meant when the terrorist fears impacted profitable package tours business with Egypt and Turkey travellers they couldn't generate sufficient cash-flow to cover the losses on the low cost short-hall 'flight only' segments. There was no slack left after re-structuring debts a while back

Brexit MAY have a small influence via the exchange rate but they were over exposed in both Euros and dollars.

The demise of Monarch put paid to the WP Seniors trip to Spain that was due to start on October 7th. We booked through Your Golf Travel and we will get our cash back soon apparently. We have since rebooked for Cyprus in November.

My son, on the other hand, was going to Amendoeira on Oct 15th. They booked Easyjet flights last Monday by 7.30am for the same dates there and back. They fly in and out of Luton which will make his trip the following day from Manchester to Orlando tight. Hope there is no delay on the return !!
