Molinari DQ i Irish Open

Harsh rule, two-shot penalty would do it in my opinion, careless or not, getting sent home seems a little OTT. As the old saying goes...'Rules are rules.'

Yes two shots would be a fair punishment in my eyes, seeing as it is the playing partner that gets the score wrong in the first place.

I agree. Seems too strict a rule to me. Can't think of too may sports where you're required to do your own admin! Jetted round the world, your own caddie, personal taxi, 5-star hotels etc etc, but mark your card. I know it's the way golf is, but there seems to be too many players getting DQd these days. Maybe it's fatigue, because they're jetting half way around the world every week. You could argue it's just careless and I agree, but there's getting penalised and there's getting booted out.

All he had to do was check his scores afterwards its his own fault he doesn't even have to add them up correctly just make sure they are written in the right order by his marker if he can't then he deserves all he gets

Stupid rule -if its not deliberate they should just correct the score. It is his living and isn't "do whats fair" a basic golf principle? :(

It doesn't take much to check hole by hole. If we can all manage it in our club competitions surely a pro and his marker can get it right. I thought after the Mark Roe incident they had introduce scorers that took them through their cards before signing now to make sure everything was double checked.

No sympathy either - he knew the rules, and it isn't hard to check.

And think about it. It has to be a harsh rule - otherwise a player could chance his arm at fabricating a score. Of course that's not what Molinari did, but having only a modest penalty would alter the balance of risk/reward for a dishonest player.

"Mark the correct score else you're out" - seems a fair enough rule to me?

Who was it many moons ago that marked his ball then moved his marker to allow someone else a clear line. When he replaced the ball, he didn't replace the marker. He holed out to win the Open but wasn't penalised because he hadn't gained any clear advantage by putting from the wrong place

As for the Mark Roe incident, I thought that was a farce.
That was just Jobs worth gone daft.

Well Mr Molinari won't do that again. Complacency, laziness, who knows what he was thinking about. It's not the fault of the guy who filled in the card, it's Molinari's fault for not checking it properly. Its only 18 numbers he has to have written down on his card, he doesn't even have to add them up, as long as the number is right for the right hole thats it. It's not as if these guys even have big numbers to worry about.

I accept that the rules are there and we must abide by them but in Professional Golf why can't they dispense with the players having scorecards altogether.

They have a posse of hangers-on following them around and if I remember correctly there is someone jotting down the scores and radioing them through to the scoreboards. So if someone is already marking the scoring why bother doing it again? This would negate the DQing for marking incorrect scores. Lets face it in the Roe/Parnevik saga everyone knew what scores both players had just that they marked them on the wrong cards - who the hell cares? They've still played the holes and scored what they've scored and millions on TV have seen them do it.

So in Pro golf have markers. In amateur golf we do it ourselves for the obvious reason.

So you are suggesting every Pro tournament needs 128/156 markers on each day then.....some tournaments don't even get that many spectators!!!

It's not too tricky remembering 18 scores is it?

Lots of people say he deserves it. Have any of you guys ever made a mistake at work?

If so did you have your pay for that week taken away, but still had to pay your tax NI etc? (Equiv to losing the prize money but still paying entry fee, caddy etc)

I'm sure you wouldn't be happy with this.
