So yesterday, me + 3 played in the Mold Golf Club gents 4bbb open.

Having never played Mold G.C I was quite excited having been told what a quirky little place it was. We knew before hand we were going to be playing in the rain, that wasn't an issue, we were prepared.

We arrived prompt, signed in and headed to the putting green with about 20 mins to spare. The rain began to batter it down, I'm talking biblical proportions. Practice green flooded. Decided would be no point in getting wet, wouldn't gain anything from putting through puddles anyway so e headed down to the first to get set and watch the group in front go off. Their wasn't one.

We had the 09:10 tee time and so we arrived just before the 09:00 tee should have been going off. They were nowhere in sight. The starter on the first told us the course was flooding and pointed out the second green. Genuinely, it was about an inch under water in parts, completely unplayable. He told us he was certain they were going to suspend play any minute, but they didn't and he couldn't understand why.

The 09:00 tee passed and so at 09:10 we played away. The starter explained that the 09:00 tee had stayed in the club house and were refusing to come out. (He wandered back to the club) They were going to have a pot of tea and wait for the rain to die down. We were under the impression the rain was in for the day and it couldn't remain at the intensity it was falling for long. Without the suspension, we felt we had to play on.

The first hole was a disaster anyway. I won't bore you with the details, but my oppo, who was about 30 ft from the pin 4 putted. Not because he's a bad putter, but because he genuinely couldn't hit the ball hard enough to get it to the hole. It was ridiculous. He may as well have been playing at the bottom of a swimming pool.

We moved onto the 2nd, knowing what that green was like and hoped someone would reach us before we got to the green. It never happened. We played down and somehow, our playing partners managed to score, by aquaplaning the ball to the hole. Still, no one came to suspend play.

It continued very much the same until about the 6th, when the rain started to ease. It eventually stopped on or around the 10th. The course didn't really dry out all day but we did manage to make the most of a bad situation and just enjoyed what we could. We all agreed it would be a great course to play in ideal conditions and hope to return.

Now, a question for you all because I've looked through the rules and can't seem to conclude an answer.

The group off at 09:00, I'm presuming, went out later on. We had friends in the club house who teed off at 10:30, who told us, everyone was moaning for the comp to be abandoned or suspended but that call never came. They went and played in their allotted time, but others seem to have gone when they felt like it.

So, any groups that failed to go out at their allocated tee time, should they face any penalties or disqualification for being late? Genuinely won't matter to me and my oppo as we never threatened the the prizes, but our oppo's posted a good score and potentially could be affected, as clearly those who delayed in the morning for later on, got MUCH more favourable conditions.

Thoughts?

Oh and for the topping, my oppo got a 2 and was told the par 3 he got it on didn't count in the balls sweep. Wasn't mentioned when she asked if we all wanted to pay in. Never mind.

Totally agree, anybody not teeing off at their allotted time should be disqualified from the competition.
Can see it from the clubs point of view, if they abandon they need to refund monies received, if you suspend you risk not having enough time to get everybody out.

Coincidentally we were the group who went out at 9:20 and I echo everything said by the OP. My pp was 51" from the pin in 2 at the second ( nearest the pin in two prize) and walked off with a 5! I take it you were the ones we talked to as we teed off for the 2nd?

If they miss their tee time surely they should be DQ'd. Can't see how they can be allowed to tee off late unless their is a genuine suspension in play and the organising committee decide to revamp the timings/draw accordingly. Just not going out isn't acceptable. Shame the club green staff didn't give the organisers the heads up on how it would handle the conditions to help them make a decision

We'd have been coming up the 3rd I think, as you were starting 2 so not sure we spoke to you.

Would love to go back and play it on a dry day. Would also love to see the time sheet. Our two playing partners finished 2nd byba point.

Sounds like a poor decision from the club not to suspend play , but also the players should have insisted that play be suspended, because with the best will in the world, you cannot play on flooded greens.

I'd have joined the previous group in the clubhouse and told the organiser to sort his life out.

I hear ya fragger. We did discuss walking back in but didn't want to risk DQ for not going out.

Think I'll email the club for an explanation.
