So, I ignored the lure of the gym in favour of the lure of the shiny stuff at DG, and tried a few irons out.

First up, Mizuno MP53, TTDG R300 shaft.

This is the same shaft I have in my ZBs, so should be a good place to start. Familiarity and all that. However, not hugely impressed. Middled ones went ok, but nothing special, none of this amazing Mizuno feel that the Mizzy lovers rave about, all in all a bit disappointing really. Just another golf club. Top line wasn't to my eye either. Just don't get the Mizuno thing. Would rather play my ZBs.

Adams CB1 with PX flighted 6.0.

The heads on these are a work of art. Gorgeous to look at, sat really nicely behind the ball, minimal offset, and one of the thinnest top lines out there. I really like the black finish too. Here the good stuff ends though. I have never got on with PX shafts, and still don't. No power, totally dead feel, don't like the weight either. Shame, as I really fancy these. Hit a few ok, but seemed like hard work.

Adams CB2 with KBS tour 90 Stiff.

Another nice looking head, a bit more offset than the CB1s, and a busier looking cavity (less good). Still got the sexy black finish though (how long this would last is any ones guess, but probably less than a week). These are the business. Really lovely to hit. Long too (although looking at the lofts this is probably due to them being up to 2 degrees less loft than my ZBs - why do manufacturers do this?). I've not hit KBS shafts before, and was really surprised. They are quite light, but unlike the PX, they retain some feel (possibly because they make the head seem heavier). Really impressed with the shaft. I really love these irons, didn't want to put them back.

So, CB2s then. RRP £800, reduced to £700, 20% off, bargain at £560.

But.....

I need them 1/2" longer than standard, so I either pay £40 to get them lengthened here, or I wait 2 months for them to be made in the US and delivered over here, and then have to get them loft and lie checked.

But, what I'd really like is a half set of CB1s, and the longer irons in the CB2s, all with the KBS. If they are making them for me, I wonder if they can do a mixed set? The lofts are a bit out, but heck, I can always get them adjusted to give an even gap between clubs.

But.....

I haven't got £560. Damn.

Wish I hadn't bothered looking.

Good review.

If you use Titleist ZBs and you liked the Adams then they must be the real deal. Also interesting to read your views on the shafts. Have you tried a softer PX like 5.0? If so, any thoughts?

Adams are another of those smaller brands that don't get much write up but if people like Watson and Langer are using them they must be good 'cos those guys know their stuff and could have their pick of any gear out there. If they are contributing to the designs then I'm not surprised the clubs are good.

I do love the feel of my Mizunos but have also hit Macgregor VIPs and a Wilson FG Tour recently and did think they were just as good.

I tried the PX 5.0 when I was fitted for my ZBs, and just didn't have a clue with it. I like to feel the weight of the club head as I swing, and with these shafts I just can't. No idea why.

To be honest, I tried the MP-53's and hit a few balls with them at Nevada Bob's in london a few months ago and wasn't impressed and I'm a mizzy fanboy. Much prefer my 57's. The 63's were nice though.

I wouldn't rule out a set of Titleist irons in future. Two or 3 of my mates play them and they're jolly lovely. But I'd rule out whatever Mizuno's are the latest shiny toys first.

You should just have hit the S56's Murph and saved yourself the dilema, and the nice chaps at Ping also have no hesitation in mixing up a set of long iron I15's and a mid-short irons in the S56's, heck they'll even alter lofts and lies to suit you free of charge!
;)

I have to admit though, Adams are a company thats starting to catch me eye as well.

I too have hit the Adams CB2'S, found the shafts gave me a nice flight, head was gorgeous and as you've mentioned they do go a country mile, but after getting them in the loft machine they are an couple of degrees strong! I have to say being a Mizuno man myself they did rival for feel and felt very soft off the face!
