Jeremy Clarkson's comment that striking public sector workers "should be shot" was not in breach of broadcasting rules, media watchdog Ofcom has said.

Asked about striking workers during November's public sector walk-out, Clarkson said he would "execute them in front of their families".

It resulted in 31,000 complaints to the BBC, and 736 to Ofcom.

But the broadcasting standards body concluded that the Top Gear presenter's comments "were not made seriously".

It added that Clarkson's words "were not at all likely to encourage members of the public... to act on them in any way".

Did the statement start ' Whilst we accept Mr Clarkson is a knob of the highest order......were not made seriously..... they were a misguided attempt at humour that sadly fell well short of the mark' ?

I think most of the complaint's came from union officials, considering Clarkson's remarks got more coverage than the strike. Seriously if you wanted to ask a question on the issue of public sector pensions then i think Jeremy Clarkson would be way down the list and no one with half a brain would actually take his comments seriously think common sense prevailed.

Actually, I find the character that Mr Clarkson plays on TV to be quite funny at times. I also thought that the conversation in question was quite amusing... But thats just me I suppose. Its an innate ability to distinguish fact from fiction... I bet the people complaining are also the ones who attack the "baddie" characters in Corrie and Eastenders when they see them in the Supermarket..

I love Top Gear and think he's downright funny for sure. Last night when they were making mobility scooters was hilarious! He's very un PC which I think is genuinely him but at least he's honest about it!

I was chatting to someone who went to the making of last nights programme. It took over 5 hours to make, the 5 minutes news section took 1.5 hours and they said that Top Gear was the BBC's highest grossing export. At the end Clarkson spent about 1/2 hour doing introduction for tv companies across the world

Its an absolute "no mis"s for me every week and I have been trying for about 3 years for tickets - my friend had waited 5 years - so a while to wait yet!

Each to their own, but I used to like top gear about 6-7 years ago. It just feels a bit stale now. The challenges they do are really contrived and Jeremy Clarkson is a dinosaur.

I always wondered who would go and watch it ..... and now I know :D

I've never thought about going to see it filmed and not sure I'd like to be surrounded my petrol heads! I have to say the motoring element does interest me but mainly it makes me chuckle at 3 blokes having a blokey time together and thoroughly enjoying it.

Have to agree.
All this PC rubbish gets on my nerves.
31,000 complaints to the BBC? How many of that 31,000 actually saw the interview?
They all jump on the "I'm offended" bandwagon.
Sadly Amanda, as you are nearing coffin dodger status () you were obviously brought up in the school of hard knocks where you just got on with it. Nowadays is all wrapped up in cotton wool and you cant saw boo to a goose without upsetting the local neighbourhood goose society pillocks.

Offended my Tush

Clarkson did say at another time. That he agreed with the strikers. But the BBC told him to be controversial as it was expected of him.

Apparently tickets are strictly, male with female, to stop the petrol heads. They give different coloured bands so that the can call all the good looking younger ones to the front

Perfectly put - apart from the coffin dodger reference.
