Might Be Time to Consider a Move

I don't think it is tough, it's approx £1200/annum. It's the crap course, lack of facilities and piss poor atmosphere that keeps people away.

Vastly overpriced then?

Surprised there are any idiotic members paying the sub if it is as bad as that....what keeps them there, are the barmaids smart cos it sounds like there is feck all else there?!

I agree... I think people stay because there literally is no where else... if somewhere was run properly it would be flooded with members. The money is definitely out there.

Our place is €480 and still people leave thinking the grass is greener. Personally having played quite a few courses and been a member of oner that was charging me over €1300 to be a member then it isn't cost that is the over-riding factor of being a member (for me anyway), but what the club offers.

What has wound me up is that the club needs additional funding so the proposal is to charge existing members and additional £75 a year (about a 15% increase) to cover the loss in income.

If there were other issues which were concerning me, this would certainly make my mind up.

I agree with you 110% - allowing new members a reduced fee to attract them to the club is fine. To expect existing members to pay an increased fee to compensate is blatant p*ss taking.

It would serve them right if a huge number of the membership just didn't bother with the AGM and simply voted with their feet.

What? You think its fine that somebody who is getting the same facilities pays less? No chance, you are either a full member or not you cannot have two tiered memberships as it will only lead to anger amongst the "established" members.

If it attracts new members to the club and keeps the cost down for me then I could just about live with it, yes. Certainly if the only alternative was a big hike in my fees.

But to have both is just not on.

It happens in every walk of life, new customers get the 'deal'.

Should we whinge when it happens to us golfers?

No, and that's exactly what I'm saying - but it should be confined to the new customers getting a decent deal. The trace off should not be the existing customer paying more to make up the shortfall.

I would merely look at becoming "the new customer" elsewhere.

Hey GB,

Please tell me more of what is going on there. It is where I was a member and grew up playing at. The only reason I ever left was because I joined the RAF. I left in 1998 and I was sorry to leave the club. I found everyone to be really nice and polite and Angus the Pro taught me how to play and I always found him to be a really good pro. The course was always fantastic and the greens were always immaculate.

Sos what the hell has happened to such a good club. When I joined back in the early 90's adult men had to be on a waiting list for anything up 5 - 7 years to get in.

I think we should. Correct or not, we are encouraged to think that we are more than that. We are members, part of the club, involved in the running, essential to the atmosphere so we are more than just customers.

As a new member to a club year I paid £650 with no joining on fee.
The renewal for existing members was £750, (this was for full membership 7 day a week golf)
I am happy with my club & will be rejoining in April even though it will cost me £750.
I just excepted that situation when I joined.

All the local clubs are different, I have about 6 clubs all within about 15 miles of where I live, with varying degrees of membership, some have joining fees & some don't, all are priced at £750 - £1000 per year for membership.

I think a lot depends on where a club is situated regarding membership & affordability, those in fairly affluent areas may be ok in the long run, but others in big city's or rural areas may well struggle.
It's not going to get better any time soon & to stay afloat more clubs will have to get ever more inventive to attract members.

I do not think things have gone wrong so much as the club being complacent and simply stagnating. The course is still decent and generally in good condition (though the greens have fluctuated a little over the 4 years I have been there and the rough has never really been that punitive over the last couple of years). I think the main issue is that the club has had the same large core of members for a large number of years. That is where the complacency comes in. When the status quo suits the those long term members then there is never going to be any change. They play in the same groups at the same times and no comps are drawn and there are no roll ups so it is very hard to integrate. And once you are in, you find your own group and do the same as everyone else. The committees have been the same people since I started and the captain etc comes from that same group of long term members. They run things to suit them and I have seen no change. You may remember the club house that had some character. That was re-fitted and is now like a Travel lodge lounge and a bit soulless.
Do not get me wrong, it is still a good club but more and more I am finding that it may not be for me. Little things have been niggling me and there just really does not appear to be any spark to drive it forward. Basically asking existing members to finance discounts for new members may be the final straw. What keeps me here is the fact that I put in the effort to find a dozen or so people who I can call on for a round. My thought is to try the trial membership at Belton Park and if I can find few good lads to play with in that month then the move may be on.

One thing that has not been said. It is against the law to have a two tier charge. Equality laws and all that. So your club is acting in a unlawful manner and can be prosecuted.

Not if it is an under represented group. (I think)
