But we are repeatedly told that the TV Licence is not a tax but a facilitation fee.

If it is, in fact, a tax then the activities of the BBC must fall under far greater scrutiny.

In addition the principle of the Licence Fee being a tax requires agreement through the normal democratic process.

I don't think I should have to explain why I believe that each and every one of us should care for the well-being of our 'neighbour' (not just our literal neighbour) - that as individuals of a society we all have social responsibilities - and sometimes these responsibilities mean spending our money on someone else.

But if you don't think that that should or need apply to you then fine.

Well, that's always been a bit of a porky... Now proven with the cost of licences for over 75's to come out of the licence fee rather than general taxation...

I couldn't agree less, we have a responsibility to be decent human beings, and if we are in position to help others then by all means I'm a huge advocate of doing whatever can be done to help and to help out charities that have meaning to us, but I don't agree we have a social responsibility to each other to ensure someone else has their TV licence paid, a roof over their head yes as nobody should have to be homeless, food in their bellies yes, heating yes, but a TV licence nope I can't buy into that paying money into something I myself would choose not to have if I had choice so someone else can watch a repeat of bargain hunt or antiques roadshow nope...

Ahh society, selfish, planet killing, animal murdering Neanderthals. But make sure you pay your TV license so the Eastenders cast can still have jobs, and 95 year old Brenda down the road can still listen to Radio 4.

Off topic but in the days before all electric transport I used to wonder why road tax wasn't included when buying petrol, zero evasion by any road user and heavy road users pay proportionally more than the once a week to church road user, fuel efficiency also reduces the amount you buy (by the very virtue you don't fill up as often) and because there's no evasion built into the cost as there is now it will actually be cost each user less anyway

The license doesn't cover radio or downloading podcasts at your leisure, so they're irrelevant to the discussion.

It is relevant because the license helps pay for them unless you think they are produced for free

It's not relevant because we're talking about whether we want to pay for the TV license or not. So what's the point of bringing things into the discussion that you don't need a license for? You only need it to watch live telly and BBC iplayer. Everything else you can still partake in without a license.

Not for me it's not, I don't watch BBC, don't listen to BBC radio stations (not that they need a few for that), I don't use iPlayer, and my kids don't watch the BBC kids channels. I literally get no value out of my BBC licence paying fee. In fact I've watched one 40 min programme on it in 2018 so that equates to £147 for 40mins viewing what a bargain:oops:, could easily not have watched that 1 thing as well.

What value do I get from it then but do I have a choice not to pay it as I own a TV set absolutely no choice or value at all.

However the kids watch Sky, I watch Sky sports, Mrs loves the movie channels and box sets, we get so much more value from that.
