Google Sheets is ok for basic stuff. And there are other free packages.
For the sake of £60, I’d stick with Microsoft.
I'm guessing we need to an MS product to open legacy documents and spreadsheets ?

I still use 2007 because it does all I want it for. I only upgraded form 1997 because I had compatibility issues when I was on the committee.
I'm still using Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition and I have an 'MS employee' 2007 gold disk. If I need to send stuff to others I save as .xls or .docI'm the same! I acquired Office 2007 lifetime and it works for me - and I dislike Microsoft as a company!
Google Sheets does similar to Excel, but the differences/quirks get up my nose! And I dislike Google as a company even more than I do Microsoft!
Well, given that I first encountered PCs in 1982, I've used a few packages - starting with Lotus on the original IBM PC. Not sure which was the first WP I used though, as there were quite a few competing.I'm still using Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition and I have an 'MS employee' 2007 gold disk. I've just started using Google Docs and Sheets...and it's OK for what I need them for. Some limitations and maybe some formatting inconsistencies when a Google Doc is opened in MS Word - but TBH for the basic word processing and spreadsheet stuff I need it seems to be (early days using it) perfectly adequate.Google. Docs and sheets .. both outstanding
