Because thats the only reason the SNP exists. Take away their independace fight and they loose their very lucrative incomes. Sort of reminds me of Westminster and the Euro MP's.
The only reason that the SNP has so many seats in the Westminster Government is the total ineptitude of the Labour Party. They always took the support of the Scots for granted (they had been the majority party in Scotland for years), and got a well deserved kick in the nuts for their neglect!

yes - one reason - but not the only reason, and now that the SNP are there it's going to be pretty hard to dislodge them - no matter how rubbish some might think they are now and might be in the future.

So given your experience of the discussions you hear in the GC - is it simply SNP party politicos and the government who are fomenting all this talk of independence and another referendum we hear of in the media and elsewhere (though I sense it is more the unionists who are talking up the SNP talking about another referendum rather than the SNP itself) - or are folks on the ground actually engaged and driving this discussion themselves.

Some want independence for Scotland irrespective of who is in power either side of the border. Some want the socialist policies of the SNP rather than a Tory govt but don't want independence. Some don't want either the SNP or independence.

A common theme is finance, with many of the pro Union supporters saying Scotland can't afford it. The indy's common response is the price of oil will rebound.

Locally, I'd say the majority want Indy. Quite what other areas want, I haven't a scooby.

Interesting. Also there is an impression given - or taken - that talk of independence comes from the SNP politicos and leadership - and that the rest of the country isn't that interested in talking about it at the moment. However you suggest that as far as the guy on the Holburn Street omnibus is concerned it is not 'a settled thing' - with much debate still to be had.

On the 'oil price will rebound' argument - I agree - I too have heard much convinced views of that sort. Because that's how it's always been.
