Maths Question

Have they not got all the kids with their 'times tables' by 10 yet?

I know. It really grates me. I will keep trying though.

When I was at primary school we had to learn them so well that it was 'the ruler' if we got one wrong in class.
Because I picked them up fairly quickly I was even charged with making sure of of the slower pupils knew his as well, or it was me
who got the punishment.

Unfair, yes, but it worked!!

My son had one once which was.. 'list all the possible combinations of coins you could take out of your pocket if you had one of each coin'

He was 7

Tough question for a 10 year old but it's good that it starts developing logic skills as opposed to learning a rote way of solving a problem.

+1

To be given such a question is a pointless exercise for most at that age without some guidance and I would hope that pupils given this question for homework were well prepared in class beforehand. Homework is useless if the child has zero clue how to attempt it because it then usually becomes parents' output.

think it depends on when the question was set. Eg were. 10/- shilling notes in circulation or 1/2 Ps etc. I could go on but a difficult question

Tough for a young kid.

I think if there were for example 10 coins: 10*9*8*7*6*5*4*3*2= N

My daughter when 5yrs old was asked how many ways with coins are there of making ten pence. i thought that was tough enough! well not tough, but long winded!

The purpose of such exercises set to such young children is to have them practice their addition repeatedly rather than an exercise in combinatorics - teachers can be devious that way .....
