i have 2 quad bikes which my father in law uses on the estate he looks after, and he's bringing them over for my missus to use for going to feed the horses etc.

now what is required to make them road legal?

they are at the moment just your usual offroad quads that you see on farms.......

i've tried searching online and it doesn't seem quite clear what is required,if it's too much hassle i ain't going to bother and i'll probably sell them on but it would be very handy to use them and save taking the cars down the farm road.

any information would be appreciated:)

Firstly they must have a registration plate to make them road legal.

Also require insurance plus MoT.

You DO NOT need to wear a helmet as these are classed as cars, not bikes, its only a safety recommendation although they are trying to change this law. Also you must have a DL not a bike licence to use them.

Hope that helps.

Road tax, licence, insurance and they need to be registered.

If registered as farm vehicles then your good.

If unregistered you need to register them and if not registered as a farm vehicle you need to have a locking parking brake. You also need a locking fuel cap.

It goes without saying you need a horn, mirrors and flashers to get the bike registered.

I have a Can-am outlander 800cc here in Canada and I'm thinking of taking mine back and registering as a road vehicle.

Sorry just realised you said they are used on an estate at present, I would also guess that these are not road leagl. They need to have road specific or at least legal tyres, a horn lights speedo etc. Plus what I have posted above.

I am a bit of an expert on this as of 3 days ago but thats another story!

i knew some of this,i have my bike licence but the missus would be using the quad so that's good but do i not need to register it some way or another?especially as it's never been registered before....and the fact it's not new?

seems a lot of hassle,i had heard that if they are road legal from new then a lot of them are tax exempt and mot exempt if they are used under farm use or something like that.

yeah helmets are not a legal requirement even on trikes aswell i believe......

the quad would literally be on public roads for 400 yrds max so if it's too much hassle i don't think i'll bother.

they do have a speedo and lights but whether the lights would comply with the regulations or not i don't know.and i'm sure there is brake lights fitted but at the moment they have offroad wheels fitted.

so if i register them as a farm vehicle then that means they can be used as they are?and if this was the case do you have to have a licence plate fitted and would this information be supplied when they become registered as a farm vehicle?

cheers

Yes, should, but only if you live on a farm.

Apparently they check these things out when you register.

hmmmmm, what i was thining as an option was for my missus to give them the quads and in return they could register them as farm vehicles and allow her to use one.

not sure what would need doing with regards to insurance, and maybe this would only be allowed if she was employed on the farm.

Just have her as a named driver on the policy.

Not sure about the insurance aspect of this, but check out www.quadsuk.co.uk or .com, they have a site and if you contact the webmaster they'll give you the do's and don't.

Alternatively get the brand of the quad and contact the manufacture they'll advise whats got to be done!

Some pics of my beast ;)
