Having just moved to Royal Ascot after 4 1/2 years at my old club it has suddenly become apparent to me how much you rely on local knowledge and to a large extent your sub-conscious when chipping and putting.

I've always considered myself good at reading greens but at the moment I reckon I'm losing 2 or 3 shots a round because I simply don't know the greens. I've got used to knowing pretty much how a putt or chip will break without even looking at it and used to knowing subconsciously when a green will break more or less than it looks and adjusting accordingly.

I hit some good chips and putts yesterday that went just where I wanted and ended up leaving me completely bemused, I feel like I've got a whole load of putting knowledge in my head which has all of a sudden become absolutely useless. I just hope it doesn't take too long to fill it up with something useful again.

I had the same problem when I changed a few years back.
Shouldn't take too long if you play regularly. You'll have it sussed by the summer.

I've always found Ascots greens sh it too

You've got high standards Smiffy, I've not seen so much as a bobble so far which considering the time of year is remarkable. Granted they have a bit of snow mould (or whatever you call it) but they're quick for the time of year and true.

T'was only joking... ;) ;)

They're not bad to be honest, although in the few times I've played there they have been a bit slower than I would have liked.
But like you say, pretty "bobble free"
:D

Having had the pleasure of my company for a couple of rounds now you'll know the one thing I am fairly consistent with is the putter so I'm prepared to give you some reads for a nominal charge. We're playing in the 4 ball stableford on the 19th March and if you need a hand shout. We might have a squeak if you play to your normal steady standard and I make a couple of guest appearances every now and then
