I love Tom Watson. As a relative newbie to golf I don't really know much about the legends of yesteryear. Recently got Mr Watson's DVD and I love the simplicity, his passion and the overall premise: that learning about golf is a lifelong vocation. It was fascinating watching him replay the chip in on the 17th at Pebble Beach but what surprised me was his claim that he didn't figure out the secret to the golf swing until 1994! So Tom let me get this right you've won Eight majors a host of other tournaments and been World Number One and you think you did it with an iffy swing!!!!!!! WTF!

Anyway if you are looking to get someone who golfs a gift you can't go far wrong with this.

PS I've changed my putting grip having watched this and have much more control now. The end of my woes? We'll see tomorrow but whatever happens I'll still love Tom ;)

Spine angle. I thought he said it was 1992? ;) .... on a Tuesday.

Might have been 92 James. I know it was at Harbour Town

I know stuff ;)

Totally agree with his sentiment about his swing though, there's a lot of bad swings on the tour but who's going to change when they're winning? No one. You go with what you've got when you spent 20yrs practicing it  ...takes some serious nuts to change at that level.

How long does the DVD last?

About two and a half hours spread across two discs

Good clip, Tom Watson is a legend. It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how many swing faults you have as long as all of those falts work together to produce a consistent swing because if it's consistent, you can work with it. Kind of makes you wonder why us amateur's spend half our golfing life trying to change when we might be better just working with what we have.

Saw him interviewed at the Oz Open yesterday and what a sportsman he still is. Was "embarrassed" by his score the previous day and you could see it in his eyes - still so much fire having won so much - a true champion.

Agreed , he comes across as a great man and a great golfer

Big up the Watson

Absolutely
I managed to get down as low as 4,before my back problems, and i was able to give many lower handicappers fits, during scratch matchplay games, and my swing is AWFUL !
Consistent scoring is possible with any swing,i think too many people set there sights too high with regard to swing mechanics.

I 'met' Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus at the bar at Royal Troon when the Open was there, I turned around and there they were ordering a drink and chatting about their practice round! In my head we had a great chat exchanging info about the game and arranging to meet later! In reality I was dumbstruck standing beside legends and slunk back to my seat to stare at them like a demented psychopath! If only I had my time machine with me that day!!

Unfortunately some of what he's saying isn't actually true so this is WHY amateur golfers spend half their lives trying to change.

Just that clip... it's not quite right, even if you turn your shoulders correctly you CAN'T move them behind the ball as much as you want (as he says) without your shoulder level dropping so then you have to manipulate something as we can't just lengthen our spines at will. This movement often results in a reverse pivot (if you try and keep your head over the ball) and or a lot of hitting the ground behind the ball.

Your swing would look like you drop in your backswing and then raise again on your way back to the ball.. a bobbing action. You also wouldn't REALLY want to be moving your head around that much if you could help it. If that's want you've been doing for 20yrs and you want to stick with it then that's fine by me but that doesn't make it RIGHT.

Totally agree with the part about spine angle and turning your shoulders on an inclined plane, that part IS part of the golf swing's 'secret' if their is such a thing.

Latest news: Tom the legend Watson has fixed my putting. Grip change much more control and very happy man!!!

.....did you putt like him and miss a lot of short ones? ;)

sorry, that was my negative answer.

Well done! sounds great Tiger :D you must be chuffed,.. awesome! High 5's alround!

Sorry James but not sure how you can knock the advice of a golfing legend because it doesn't fit into your perceptions of how to swing a club
