I've booked a block of 6 lessons with my local pro.
Should I try and get a structure from the start or just go with the flow on what he suggests?

My game is so inconsistent it's frustrating me no end, I can go out one day and play well, for me anyway, then go out the next and look like I've never hit a ball before.

Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated.

Have you ever had lessons before?

A few years ago as a present, had them but never really followed on from them as time and a young family took precedence 😀
Really got the bug this time though and want to improve 👍🏻

Have a think what you want to get out of them. Sounds obvious but I'm sure many don't have that thought. It may be a better swing, or you may want to improve certain shots. For example, I was not hitting the ball cleanly earlier this year and I struggle with longer irons/hybrids. I spoke to the pro beforehand and mentioned this is what I wanted to focus on. He was happy with that as there was a clear target to aim for.

Having 6 lessons will leave plenty of time to cover all that you need. Perhaps start with an open book for the pro and then think by lesson 4 onwards about specific weaknesses that you want to sort out.

One tip I would give is not to cram them in too quickly. You need time between each lesson to put each improvement in place. You also need to give your brain time to process each lesson. It is amazing how full your brain becomes during and after a lesson.

Take notes after so that when something creeps back in months down the line you can go back and revisit without necessarily going for another lesson. Used to have them in the back of the members diary where there were a few pages

Lesson 1. putting
2. chipping
3. pitching
4. bunkers
5. irons
6. woods and driver

Bob - would you not look at the overall swing first, inc grip? That may make some of the other lessons much simpler. Not being smart, interested in hear why you chose the plan above.

Love that bob is one of few pros I have come across that knows that playing golf is about getting the ball in the hole and not just playing golfswing.

Each lesson the swing gets progressively longer. Much easier to moniter and fix a swingfault on a half swing (pitch) than with a driver

This might sound daft, but is it not different swings for using a driver compared to irons?
Sweeping swing for driver, hit down for irons.

There are differences between hitting irons and driver, that's why there's a separate lesson for each but if your swingpath is wrong for your irons its probably going to be wrong for your driver.

Had my first lesson today, my biggest problem is consistency, the way I gripped the club was the first small change he made, but made a massive difference to keeping the club square all the way through.
Looking forward to going out and putting it in action, will probably take a bit of time to get used to but I think if I stick with it I'll see the benefits in the long run, next lesson on the 30th.
