Played with HTL against Smiffy and his mate Norman at Leatherhead this afternoon defending our unbeaten matchplay record. The weather was glorious and the course was in great condition. It's not that long even off the whites we used but it is very tight with tree lined fairways and very small and firm greens.

I wasn't feeling that great still healthwise and to be honest hacked my way round. HTL and I lost the first after a bit of a comedy of errors all round but we got it back on 3 when HTL made 4 nett 3. Norman took the 4th and Smiffy won the 5th with a good par on a tricky little sleeper hole. However HTL and I then got on the birdie trail. I hit a 7 iron close at 6 and made the putt and HTL made a good putt to birdie the par 5 8th before outrageously holing a greenside bunker shot for a 2 at the 9th to give us a two up lead at halftime.

Norman got a great par 4 at the 10th SI 1 but could only get a half with HTL who had a shot. I managed to finally give my partner some support at the uphill 12th thanks to a friendly kick off a greenside mound to set up a winning par. Smiffy then hit a great little pitch at the next to pinch a hole back but HTL and I both parred 15 to go back to 2 up. The deal was done when HTL blasted a drive down the 507 yard 16th and hit the green with his 2nd (but did three putt) to close it out 3&2.

I have to say that Smiffy and Norman were great company and both were very steady and hit a good long ball and they have invited us down to their manor for a re-match. I have to say that HTL has come on hugley since the start of the year and will be down to low teens or even 11 or 12 soon.

There was a stableford game on the side which unsurprisingly HTL romped with 37 points (including two blobbed holes). Norman had 31, Smiffy 29 and I limped home with 27. It was a great day and you should try and play Leatherhead if you can. It is a thinkers course as you can't afford to blast it wildly and has a lot of very interesting holes.

looks like you had a good day + good game... nice win overall ;)

Leatherhead brings back memories of half a lifetime ago, when it was a members club.
Played many rounds with my Father-in -law (Les Rich, nicknamed Muscles, due to the fact how far he could hit the ball in relation to his size)as a guest, nice course.
He once one saturday evening danced on a table! after winning something or other.
He left when it was sold to some big company, and the greenfees rocketed.

Yep, it was a great day Homer and both Norman and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As you say, the course was in superb condition. We played it about 6 weeks or so ago and it is amazing how much it has come on since then. The fairways and greens were superb, some of the tees looked a little tired but other than that it was a pleaure to be out there on such a superb day for golf.
HTL is just awesome to watch. When I played with him before I said to him that if he just slowed everything down a little he would get a lot more control. He was 120mph through the ball and you weren't sure where the hell the ball was going. But yesterday he was a different player, much more in control and he has got a swing to be proud of. He hits the ball bloody miles and I have played with good single figure golfers who do not hit the ball as sweetly, or as solidly, as him. He must have hit a 7 iron about 185 yards down the first from under those trees, it went miles. His short game is coming on, and if he practices that, along with his putting (which isn't bad anyway) he will surely be down to single figures within the next year or so.
The run of three birdies that you had saw us off, and being two down with three to play, the last thing we wanted to see was the drive Hywel hit down 16. Long par 5 where he was getting a shot (SI3) and he must have hit it 300 yards at least. Left himself a choked down hybrid to get pin high and both Norman and I were left to try to make chip and putt birdies just to halve the hole! No way we were going to do that so we shook hands before he had even finished the hole!
Thanks for a great day, we all had our part to play in a good game. Look forward to the return.
And again, well played Hywel. Keep putting the cards in mate.
:D :D :D :D

Was indeed an awesome day. Very kind review lads, I like that. Can't wait to get out and play next weekend and keep putting the cards in, just got to keep saying to myself **** happens and walking off the bad shots.

Will look forward to coming down to your gaff for a return fixture.
